OPI the man with the golden gun real 18k gold top coat nail polish

While we have all been eagerly awaiting the new James Bond film Skyfall, OPI have been busy creating a whole Bond-themed collection of nail colours to celebrate 50 years of the iconic Secret Service agent.

The limited-edition collection is named after some of the stand-out Bond movies such as the glittering Living Daylights and our favourite – the 18-carat leaf top coat, The Man with the Golden Gun.

Just like 007 is making a comeback, it looks like metallic nail shades are heading back into style too, but this time in softer, more sophisticated hues.

Here is our pick of the best metallic polishes available with expert advice from Tara Oldham, Head of Education for OPI Nails, on how to achieve the best home application. Remember to shake, not stir, before use.

A beautiful muted blue with greyish tones in a shade that makes blue nail polish so much more wearable.

Top tip: “Make sure that you use a pre lacquer treatment that balances the PH level of your nails, this will remove any grease and oils from the nail plate and will help your metallic shade to last longer.”

Described as a ‘smoky, shimmering gunmetal grey with hints of blue and sprinkled silver’ it’s quite a mouthful, but a very accurate description of this gorgeous hue.

Top tip: “Always start by painting with the hand you are least confident using. The thought process is that our interest levels are higher when we first start a task, so theoretically you will be more focused perfecting your metallic painting at the beginning of the process and therefore more likely to make a better job of it.”

This creamy shade is a lot more muted than other colours around. The burnished gold colour is a conservative take on the metallic trend.

Top tip: “Don’t apply your nail lacquer by sitting on the sofa, watching TV and balancing your bottle in between your legs! Sit at a table so that you are focused on the task and you and your hands are balanced and stable.”

This nail colour owes its extraordinary shine to Deborah Lippmann’s new formula, which creates a finish that reflects light like real polished metal. This oxidized copper shade is not for the faint-hearted.

Top tip: “Always use a base coat as this gives better adhesion for your nail lacquer and prevents staining of the nail plate. If your polish is not chip resistant like some formulas also apply a top coat once your colour has dried as your lacquer is less likely to flake off and will stay shiny for longer”.

Meteorite is a lovely purple metallic hue and the chip resistant formula means that this beautifully bold shade will last even longer.

Top tip: “And finally, always leave plenty of time to paint your nails. All too often people leave it to the last minute and are slapping lacquer on as they are running out the door. If you are going out in the evening, paint your nails in the morning. Allow yourself plenty of time to let them dry and don’t be impatient!” © Cover Media
