The perfect red lipstick. There are red lippies everywhere, yet somehow it seems like a nearly impossible task to find The One. If the lipstick is pigmented, it’ll tend to come off on your teeth. Or you finally discover a wonderfully long-lasting formula that doesn't bleed all over, the shade is just a tad “off” on your complexion. We hear you.

Which is why I was pretty fascinated when Dior launched their Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge in #999 Ultra Dior ($50) earlier this month. Touted as the universally flattering red, the #999 Ultra Dior shade is supposed to look equally good on translucent, fair skin, sallow Asian skintones and on warmer complexions.

As Peter Philips, creative and image director for Dior Make-up exclaims, women want “Everything!” from a lipstick. This is why the new Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge has an innovative new formula that is as long-wearing as an ink, yet ultra-comfortable and hydrating on lips.

The result? A semi-matte finish, 12-hour long-wear, highly saturated lip colour that feels like a weightless film and does not dry lips out. Sounds like the makeup equivalent of a unicorn.

Luckily, we have a range of skin tones and different levels of dry lips right in our office, so we could test this lipstick out and tell you if it lives up to its hype (or not).

For all of our observations (and selfies), keep scrolling.

Do you find the colour flattering?

I’m rather fair so the bright red stood out against my skin tone. Rather flattering, I would say. But generally I prefer more orange-red tones. Score: 6/10

How is the texture and colour saturation?

Texture was balmy and quite highly pigmented. I had issues with the application though, it was so balmy that it became quite hard to control. Score: 6/10

Is this moisturizing?

I have dry lips so I was very pleased at how moisturising it was on my lips. Score: 8/10

Does it last 12 hours?

Some of it came off whenever I had drinks but overall the colour didn’t fade that much, stayed on pretty well. Score: 7/10

Do you find the colour flattering?

Yes it really looked nice on my complexion. Score: 7/10

How is the texture and colour saturation?

Very easy to apply and high pigment from the get go. Quite wet though so need to be careful that the lipstick doesn't accidentally go over lip lines. Score: 6/10

Is this moisturizing?

My lips weren't dry at all - felt really good during and after wearing the lipstick. Score: 8/10

Does it last 12 hours?

Average length of staying time - when sipping hot drinks it comes off easily onto cup (given it's quite a wet finish). Score: 4/10

Do you find the colour flattering?

Extremely flattering, made me look instantly awake. A true red, it wasn’t too yellow or too blue. Score: 9/10

How is the texture and colour saturation?

Such a soft melting texture, this was a dream to apply – one swipe was all it took for a very saturated slick of colour. Score: 9/10

Is this moisturizing?

Very moisturizing, this didn’t dry out lips at all and kept them moisturized. Score: 9/10

Does it last 12 hours?

It lasted quite well through coffee and a light lunch with just slight fading. It didn’t last through dinner though. Score: 7/10

Do you find the colour flattering?

The lipstick looked quite orange against my skin tone. Really brought out the warmth in my skin tone. Score: 8/10

How is the texture and colour saturation?

Lightweight formula that made my lips look even and smooth. Score: 7/10

Is this moisturizing?

Felt very comfortable on my lips. Doesn’t feel like lipstick on the lips, more like a tinted lip balm. Hydrating, even on really chapped lips. Score: 9/10

Does it last 12 hours?

Not really. Fades throughout the day especially after eating and drinking but still leaves a light stain on the lips. Score: 5/10
