Review: Kose Infinity Cool Astringent Tighten Up, the makeup primer that doubles as a pore-minimising "mask"

This carbonated makeup primer uses a cool new technology to make your foundation last longer, even in our hot and humid weather

Cooling skincare or skincare that lowers the surface temperature of your skin to give an immediate refreshing sensation is having a major moment. Their reported benefits on skin range from soothing irritation to preventing hyperpigmentation.

But even though the Kose Infinity Cool Astringent Tighten Up gives an instant cooling sensation, it's one that doesn't fit under this trending group of products. This makeup primer is in a league of its own.

What it is

A bubbly, carbonated toner, this product pumps out of its bottle like a shaving cream of sorts. It forms a film that "hardens" at around 35 deg C, which is two degrees lower than our skin surface temperature, and conforms to your facial contours. This film then helps makeup last longer while diminishing the appearance of enlarged pores. It is also said to help prevent sebum oxidation, which Kose says causes skin ageing.

How to use

After your moisturiser, and before your sunscreen, shake the bottle well. Hold it upright, spray onto a cotton pad, wait for the bubbling to stop before running the cotton pad over your skin. You can also use it as an intensive mask by placing the cotton pad soaked with the toner over areas with enlarged pores, like your nose bridge and cheeks, for 30 seconds.

The bubbly toner also doubles as a 30-second pore-minimising "mask". Just place the toner-soaked cotton pads on areas where enlarged pores are most obvious.

Did it work?

"The astringent effect worked. The cooling sensation felt like I was running an ice cube across my face – a great perk-me-up in the morning. Even though the science says that the product forms a "film" on your skin, there is no mask-like feeling or any type of "hardening" sensation on my face. My makeup didn't budge with this primer, even though I was outdoors for most of the day. But I could see some slight flaking around my nose as I tend to rub and touch this area unconsciously throughout the day. The 30-second mask helped minimise the appearance of my enlarged pores, which made my foundation go on more smoothly. The alcohol smell if quite strong, though, so if you have sensitive skin, it's best to do a patch test first." - Kayce, beauty writer
