We are not ungrateful. There's virtually no fault with the all-round great invention that is micellar water. What gives it its name is micelles, the molecules that also imbue the product with its clean-anything-and-anywhere cleansing power – as long as you have cotton pads, and even if you have sensitive skin.

So, why does it need to be improved on? Well, its water-like texture, although universally pleasing, does feel a little like we are cleansing with only water. That's why Dior Hydra Life introduced Micellar Milk. Its milk-that-turns-to-water consistency creates a gentler, more soothing "cushion" between your skin and the cotton pad. And it cleans as well as micellar water, just in a nicer way.

The other key ingredient

Besides micelles, the Hydra Life Micellar Milk has rice milk proteins that nourish the skin and helps rebalance skin flora. Like the new-generation cleansers that are part of the gentle cleansing movement, this also leaves skin feeling refreshed and supple without a greasy feel.

How to use

Pump two pumps of the micellar milk onto a cotton pad for each of these areas – forehead, cheeks, and nose and chin. This removes all traces of light makeup and suncreen. If you have heavier makeup on, you may need to repeat once or twice more to get rid of all the gunk. It's also gentle enough to be used on the eye area.

Verdict

"Even though my skin type is more oily and combination, this felt really soothing. I also liked the fact that the milky texture glides a little more smoothly across my skin as compared to micellar water. Although I'm adamant about double-cleansing every night, I didn't feel as much need to do so with this micellar milk. I would still recommend using a point makeup remover if you're wearing waterproof mascara, eyeliner and longer-lasting lip colours.

"The best thing about this is its convenience. Because I don't need to rinse it off or emulsify it with water unlike normal cleansing oils (read about these specialised ones here) or cleansers, I can use it to remove makeup and sunscreen in the middle of the day, if I need to. And because it feels so nourishing, I don't feel the need to reapply my skincare afterwards." – Kayce, beauty writer
