If you’ve gone most of your teenage and adult life shying away from orange lipstick, you’re not alone. The first orange lipstick I ever had was a hand-me-down from my mother. It was from Tom Ford, which was a fancy boost for someone entering the working world – but it was a bright orange I thought I could never pull off and went in the back of my lipstick collection.
It wasn’t until a few years ago when orange lips became a runway trend that I dared to experiment on my own. The colour is flattering on most Asian skin tones, which isn’t all that surprising, if you think about it: Orange-based red lipsticks work well on the warm undertones of most Asian skin compared to blue-based reds, which are better suited to skin with cool undertones.
There are of course ways to ease into using orange on your lips if you want to take things slow. While working with makeup artist Dollei Seah on a shoot, she suggested that to get used to the colour, I could dab it on lightly and blend with my fingertips instead of swiping straight from the bullet. By gently dabbing on the colour, you end up with a more light-handed and natural stained effect.
