The biggest conundrum when it comes to matte lipsticks is: to wear it or not. If your lips are dry, chapped or peeling – a matte lipstick can make it worse.
You don’t have to avoid matte lipsticks and only use a lip gloss. The matte lipsticks featured here are velvety and lightweight as they contain more oils. Unlike lipsticks that leave a flat-matte finish, these are more comfortable on dry, patchy areas. They also contain blurring pigments that blur out fine lines for a smooth-looking pout.

matte lipsticks for dry lips
Three Daringly Distinct Lipstick, $53

The Japanese brand’s first foray into matte lipsticks is a little later than expected but delivers a stellar formula, nonetheless. The lipstick glides easily on the lips and smooths out fine lines. It was lightweight to the point where we almost forgot we were wearing lipstick.
Lunasol Creamy Matte Lips, $46

The liquid lipstick is creamy but doesn’t feel heavy on the lips. The formula spreads out well and sets to a thin demi-matte layer that’s hydrating and nourishing at the same time.
Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Matte, $38

Do not be scared off by the name. Shu Uemura’s bestselling lipstick formula may look ultra matte and drying but when you apply it, you’ll see how smoothly it glides on the lips, and how moisturising it is for all-day comfort.
Sen Natural Sensation Lipstick, $35

The handmade formulas of Sen Natural lipsticks made our lips look soft and petal-like, and we liked it enough to give it prominence on our vanity table. Lightly dab the lipstick over chapped, flaky areas to smoothen them out, then apply a second layer for bolder colour. Don’t worry – the layers mesh well together.
Clarins Joli Rouge Velvet, $40

The lipstick has a lightweight, velvety texture that instantly blurs out dry and/or chapped spots. The formula, while not as creamy as the Three or Shu Uemura lipsticks, still felt comfortable on dry lips.
