Mastering the art of eyeliner can be an uphill task, no matter how many years of experience you have, because one tiny mistake and you run the risk of ruining the entire look. On top of that, you are also at the mercy of the eyeliner that you choose as each eyeliner format can deliver its own set of pros and cons. For example, pencil eyeliners tend to be the easiest to apply, gel eyeliners are super intense while liquid liners are the most long-lasting. That said, regardless of your favourite eyeliner format, here are some makeup tips and easy-to-use eyeliners that will help you master that perfect flick.

Stabilise your hands
If you have shaky hands, rest your elbows on the table when you’re applying your eyeliner. This anchors you steadily so you don’t have to worry about uneven strokes.

Connect the dots
To make things easier for eyeliner novices, try marking out dots or tiny dashes along the lash line before joining them together. This way, you are more likely to draw a smooth and even line.

Be ready for clean-up
Anyone who has applied eyeliner regularly will understand that there are simply days when your eyeliner just doesn’t go your way — either the application is streaky or both sides are unequal. When that happens, it always helps when you have some Q-tips on hand to help clean up the mess. If you don’t have access to makeup remover, reach for your lip balm or petroleum jelly and dab a tiny bit onto the cotton swab before lightly rubbing on the smudges to remove them. Alternatively, you can try to mask such smudges with some undereye concealer.

Have a contingency plan
Sometimes, when you’re really strapped for time, cleaning up smudges and then reapplying might be too much of a hassle. Instead, make your clumsiness work for you—use the Q-tip to smudge out your eyeliner for a soft, smoky look instead. This way, you won’t need the effect to be as precise so it wouldn’t be as obvious even if both sides are a little unequal.
