When a mascara claims to get the job done – whether it’s lengthening, curling or volumising – in “just one swipe”, it probably can’t do the job very well. To get results in “just one swipe”, the mascara formula has to be pretty heavy – which works for lashes that are already long, thick and curly. On straight and short lashes (like the ones most of us have), these formulas more often than not result in clumped-up, spidery-looking lashes that just looks… over-the-top.
These newer mascaras have lighter formulas. Lighter does not necessary mean “less intense” – the formulas may be light, but they are extremely buildable. That means, every swipe builds on the last. You’ll start off fresh and wispy with your first coat. To get intense and dramatic lashes, swipe a couple more times. Because of how buildable these formulas are, they’re going to layer well on top of each other… all while remaining clump-free.

By Terry Lash-expert Twist Brush Double Effect Mascara, $48

No dual, triple or quadruple-bristled wand here – but a single bristled wand that doubles up as two, with a twist. And quite literally, too. Use the wand straight to lengthen lashes, and twist it into a spiral (which condenses the bristles) to volumise and thicken.
Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara, $46

Super budge-proof, smudge-proof and humidity-proof. Lengthens, curls volumises from the time you put it on till when you take it off.
Lancome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara, $48

The brush may look thick, but the bristles are long and evenly spaced apart for clump-free lashes. The formula also curls lashes beautifully.
YSL Beaute Mascara Volume Effet Faux Clis The Curler, $55

There are three types of bristles on this mascara’s wand: long and sparse on the outer curve to lengthen, short and dense on the inner to volumise, and pink spiky ones along the sides to separate and curl.
NARS Climax Mascara, $42

Has the “wettest” formula of the bunch, but that translates to intense pigment. For everyday wear – go with a quick couple of swipes for fresh, awake peepers. For a flirty date night out, layer on for va va voom lashes.
Mamonde Big Eye Waterproof Mascara, $22

Ever wanted that Korean doe-eyed look? This is the mascara to reach for. The thin, tapered wand is able to grab even the innermost lashes and fan it out. The effect is nice, fluttery, wispy lashes on your first coat, but keep going at it and you’ll get thick, full lashes.
