To most of us, red makeup belongs on only a couple of facial features: Our lips and our nails, with certain tones acceptable as blush. Red eye makeup might seem scary to most, especially when red around the eyes has always been associated with “unhealthy” things like vampirism (in movies) or sore eyes. That said, we can’t deny how bold and beautiful the shade is in and of itself, and surely one look at the eyeshadow quad alone will have you wanting to try and, in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work”.
The Le Rouge Collection No. 1 is the first collection by Chanel’s global creative makeup and colour designer Lucia Pica, and it’s a complete celebration of the colour red and in particular, meant to pay homage to the iconic red lipstick that’s been with the brand since 1924.
The collection as a whole is stunning, and even if you aren’t into the red shadows, you’ll be sure to find something to ooh and ahh over. I personally find the eyeshadow quad so warm-toned and inviting, and could definitely see myself using the red as an accent colour instead of an all-over lid shade since the other three shades are more neutral. It’s definitely a fun and somewhat adventurous palette to have, but if you just want a hint of red along your lash line, the stylo eyeliner is a really beautiful alternative.
Eyeshadow aside, there are also four red Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks in this collection, with the velvet formulas being my personal favourite. If the shades appeal to you, head down to Chanel stores when the collection launches next Friday (July 29) to swatch them all!
