Fat-freezing, also known as cryolipolysis, is not new on the market, but there is a good reason why it remains a popular option for many of us who need help to deal with stubborn pockets of fat.
Since the Covid stay-home measures kicked in, our activity levels have no doubt plummeted. Most of our daily physical activity revolves around walking from our work desk to the fridge, or to the bathroom. Adding to that, stress-induced eating and snacking, along with food deliveries, have led to us packing on the kilos and body fat, in spite of regular workouts.
While we can, and should, exercise and eat right to take care of our bodies and stay in shape, let’s admit it: There’s often some stubborn fat that lingers. Truth be told, achieving a trim waist or a flat tummy, especially as we get older, can be an elusive goal.
And that’s why fat-freezing has been long favoured, for its ability to target stubborn areas of fat, whether it’s the tummy, upper arms, inner thighs, or a double chin. Herein lies the biggest question: Which fat-freezing treatment works best?
CoolSculpting®: Proven for stubborn fat removal
For the uninitiated, CoolSculpting® is a US FDA-cleared non-surgical, non-invasive body contouring treatment that targets stubborn fat. Since its launch in 2010, it has remained the number one fat-freezing treatment globally.1 In fact, over eight million CoolSculpting treatment cycles have been performed to date.2

Even actress, producer and baking queen, Jeanette Aw, is a fan. The new CoolSculpting® ambassador says: “I have a pretty active lifestyle and exercise regularly. I also used to dance. What I realised is that dance actually activates a different set of muscles as opposed to jogging or working out at the gym. When I do my usual skipping, it’s almost impossible to target any particular part of the body, and I don’t want to sacrifice sleep to do 1,000 leg lifts to work my abs. CoolSculpting® is a great complement to my lifestyle. It’s non-invasive and targets stubborn areas.”
Fun fact: CoolSculpting® was developed by Harvard scientists, Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson, who were inspired after seeing how little kids developed dimples in their cheeks from consumption of frozen popsicles.
How CoolSculpting® works
In CoolSculpting®, the cryolipolysis technology uses controlled freezing temperatures to freeze your fat cells, sending them into permanent cell death and effectively destroying them.
These crystallised fat cells are then flushed out from the body naturally through your lymphatic and waste systems over the next few weeks.
A study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that CoolSculpting® reduces up to 27 per cent of fat3 in the treated area in just one session.
In addition, the machine comes with a variety of applicators to deliver more efficient results. Each session takes 35 to 75 minutes, depending on the treated area.
It’s also important to understand why we gain weight. According to scientists, the number of fat cells in our bodies stay stable during adulthood. When we gain weight, we’re not gaining additional fat cells. Instead, the existing cells get larger. When we lose weight, these cells shrink in size, resulting in a smaller physique.
What CoolSculpting® does is target the fat cells in a specific area – tummy, thighs, arms, flanks, back, chin, underneath the buttocks and even those annoying rolls of fat that peek over and under your bra, removing them so that there are less fat cells in that area. More importantly, it does so without affecting the surrounding tissue, so there’s effectively no downtime at all.
And that’s the beauty of CoolSculpting®. Where once you would have had to opt for surgical treatments like liposuction to remove fat, there is now a safe and non-invasive option that promises zero downtime, so you can go about your life as per normal right after.

What makes CoolSculpting® a trusted fat removal treatment?
Safety is paramount in CoolSculpting®. Each applicator is equipped with cooling panels that have built-in thermistors, which act like temperature sensors to measure the temperature of the targeted area. More importantly, these applicators are able to adjust in real time, ensuring that every treatment session is not only comfortable, but safe too.
The CoolSculpting® safety features include proactively monitoring your body temperature during each treatment. This ensures that the CoolSculpting® system reaches its target temperature. Any abnormality, such as a drop in temperature, will cause an override of the system, shutting it down automatically, so you never have to worry about getting freeze burns.
In addition, the patented Freeze Detect® protection system monitors the temperature of the skin tissue, preventing it from getting too cold, hence minimising the risk of any tissue damage.
Is CoolSculpting® for everyone?
As Dr Lam Bee Lan, founder and medical director of Ageless Medical, shared: “As long as you can pinch it, you can freeze it.” Which means us mortals would make potential candidates because most of us do, unfortunately, have some stubborn fat on our bodies. This includes those who belong to the “skinny fat” camp, who have a normal BMI but a relatively high percentage of body fat.
A healthy diet and regular exercise are still key
It is important to note that CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss treatment. You can still gain weight, because the fat cells that remain in your body can expand. So it is advisable to complement your CoolSculpting® treatments with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
For best results, patience is key, as it takes time for the body to process and eliminate the fat cells. Results can take up to three months to be fully seen.
