Let’s admit it: acne is a true pain in the neck. No matter how much we try to fight it; be with a religious skincare regimen or regular facial sessions with our trust-worthy esthetician, spots and blemishes are still bound to come back creeping back like an old friend. To add to the stress, the confusing nature of acne tends to garner a lot of differing opinions – and even more questions.

What is the root cause of my pimples? How often should I clean my face? To moisturise or not to moisturise?

With these common queries in mind, we’re here to set the record straight by addressing common myths about acne – and the real truth behind it.

Myth #1: Acne is caused by unclean skin – that’s why I should wash my face more often

Fact: While it’s true to a certain extent, acne can also be caused by a variety of different factors such as hormones, stress, genetics, and diet – no single factor is the main culprit. However, over-cleansing your face can be detrimental to the skin’s natural barrier as it strips your skin of its natural oils and moisture – thus being the catalyst for problems like rashes, dermatitis and acne.

With that in mind, it is important to find a cleanser that is both gentle and effective, namely Acnes Creamy Wash. This cleanser is a double whammy: it contains both acne-fighting ingredient salicylic acid that unclogs pores, and Centella Asiatica, which boosts the production of collagen to prevent acne scarring. Vitamins B3, C and E are also added into the mix to accelerate the skin’s metabolism, strengthen the skin’s barrier and brighten complexion.

Myth #2: Moisturisers will exacerbate oily, acne prone skin

Fact: Even oily skin needs moisturising as excess oils do not equate to effective skin hydration.
Regardless of your skin type, moisturising is the key to maintaining the skin’s barrier function and preventing excessive sebum production caused by dryness.

To help maintain your skin’s oil production while retaining sufficient moisture levels, use the Acnes Creamy Wash, a soap-free cleanser, and the Acnes Powder Lotion, an oil-absorbing mineral powder suspended in a lotion. Both products penetrate deep into the pores to eliminate acne bacteria and prevent the onset of acne growth. In addition, they are infused with Vitamin C, amino acids, aloe vera extract, and avocado oil to soothe, revitalise and keep your breakouts at bay.

Myth #3: Toothpaste can heal my acne spots overnight

Fact: Many an old housewives’ tales will have you believe that applying toothpaste on your acne spots can help to shrink and dry them out. While it does contain beneficial ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and triclosan, other chemicals in the toothpaste such as sodium lauryl sulfate are too abrasive and can cause dryness and skin irritation. It can also upset the skin’s natural pH levels, which in turn causes breakouts. Moral of the story? Save the toothpaste solely for your pearly whites.

While there is no miracle cure that can heal acne overnight, there are products which help speed up the process. Case in point: Acnes Sealing Jell. This spot treatment gel is infused with 2% Sulphur Salicylic Acid that helps inhibit acne growth and promotes the shedding of dead skin cells to unclog pores. It also contains up to 95% Centella Asiatica to reduce inflammation, heal acne wounds, and lighten scarring.

Myth #4: Squeezing acne spots will make them heal faster

Fact: While picking or squeezing your own spots can seem satisfying (thanks to pimple popping videos on YouTube), it actually does more harm than good – think permanent scarring and pigmentation marks. In some cases, leaving open wounds will increase chances of reinfection.

If you can’t keep your hands off your zits, it’s important to speed up the healing process and prevent the risk of reinfection with the help of an acne patch. Acnes Anti-bacterial Acne Patch is a medical-grade patch that inhibits acne bacteria growth in 24 hours and absorbs pus and sebum, while forming a protective barrier to block out bacteria and dirt. There are two waterproof and sweatproof options available – Acnes Anti-bacterial Acne Patch for Day, measuring at only 0.02cm – and Acnes Anti-bacterial Acne Patch for Night, measuring at 0.03cm.
