Never underestimate how the choice of a nail polish colour can make on a woman’s look. She could go from looking cool and classy to fun and girly. There are many things that could affect your choice of nail colour – the seasons, trends, your mood and even the clothes you wear. While trends come and go, one of the most important factor in determining which polish hue best suits you is your skin tone.

Since there is no single polish shade that suits everyone, narrowing down to find a varnish that flatters your skin tone can be quite a struggle considering the many options available in that department. Spare yourself from all the extra swatching and read on to find out which nail colour is the most flattering for your complexion.

Light

Pastel hues like mint and baby pink are lovely on porcelain skin. If you want to add a punch of colour and warm up your complexion, go with reds or pinks. In addition to reds and pinks, don’t shy away from bright colours like orange that works beautifully with lighter skin tones. You might want to avoid darkers shades like a chocolate brown or burgundy because it could wash you out and make you look too pale.

Try: Butter London Trend Lacquer in Fiver ($18) and Ciaté London Olivia Palermo Hutch My Go To Red ($20)

Medium

Deep colours like dark burgundy and wines amplify the warm tones in medium skin. In addition to darker hues, vibrant colours like sunshine yellow helps to illuminate the brunette and tawny undertones in your complexion. Metallics like gold and earthy tones like forest green also enhances the olive undertones in medium skin tone.

Try: Nails Inc. Nail Polish in Battersea Park ($28) and NCLA What’s your sign in Gemini ($23)

Tan

As a rule of thumb, stick to lighter shades that can flatter your tan like pale brown, baby blue, pinks, purples and light grey. While grey varnish might wash out paler skin tones, it looks sensational against tanned skin. Additionally, warmer colours like red and yellow as well as neon hues, also help to bring out the warm undertone in tan skin.

Try: Butter London Patent Shine 10x Lacquer in Ta Ta! ($31) and Deborah Lippmann Lara’s Theme ($12)
