When it comes to eyeliners, we’ve got it down pat – creams, gels, powders and liquids, you name it, we know it. It is however, a different thing when it comes to brushes.

Beauty junkies we are, but it’s still easy to get overwhelmed with all the different brushes out in the market – flat tops, heart shape, pencils, fan brushes tapered and angled in every direction. Let’s not even start on bristles and density, we’ll go on forever.
So just how many do you actually need? We’ve got makeup artist Larry Yeo to break it down to the minimum, here are his recommendations for a complete beauty kit:
#1 POWDER BRUSH
Of course, the number one thing we use to fight humid weather shine – powder. Oh, and it’s also the number one enemy of us dehydrated skin folks. We want soft matte skin, not a cakey mess!
If you find powder sometimes a little tricky to apply, but really can’t do without it, try using Shu Uemura’s Natural Brush 27. “The fluffy softness of the brush and fluidness of the bristles allow a good transfer of powder without overlaying the product,” says Larry.
#2 BLUSHER BRUSH
Swipe on your healthy flush with Nars Yachiyo Kabuki Brush.
This natural hair brush is tapered and shaped like a tear-drop for the smooth application of blusher.
#3 HIGHLIGHTER OR BRONZER BRUSH
Here’s one you definitely need if you love the no makeup-makeup look. Gently sculpt your face and give it the best dimension with a fluffy synthetic brush.
13Rushes’s Tapered Highlighter brush gives you a good control over your highlighter and bronzer application without make you look like Kim K (before blending, of course).
#4 CONCEALER BRUSH
A dot of concealer on an acne spot disappears as you dab the product in – we mean literally, the spot still shows.
Get precise application and the proper coverage with Cle de Peau Beaute’s concealer brush (and maybe their famed concealer too). Larry says the firmness of this synthetic brush works perfectly with cream concealers and even eyeshadows of the same texture.
#5 FLUFFY EYESHADOW BRUSH
90s eyeshadow that go up to the brow is no longer cool.
Get the best control on your eye shadow application with the fluffy M.A.C 217 brush.
#6 FLAT EYESHADOW BRUSH
Love using cream shadows? A flat eyeshadow brush will come in handy.
Larry recommends Illamasqua’s eyeshadow brush. The synthetic brush is firm, and allows precise application of your favourite cream shadow. Works with powder, too!
#7 EYELINER BRUSH
A precisely perfect cat-eye flick can be one of the most satisfying beauty achievements for an eyeliner-lover.
Try Laneige’s eyeliner brush – it’s excellently cut and eyeliner goes on smooth.
#8 EYE BROW BRUSH
When brows go wrong, they go terribly wrong.
Steady your hand by using a brush with a wider girth like The Body Shop’s Slanted Brush.
So there you have it – the eight makeup brushes every beauty junkie should have for a complete kit!
