It’s party time! You’ve got your outfit sorted, but just as you’re about to pack your party clutch, you realise, “Goodness, how am I supposed to bring all of this?”

Many of us are guilty of not taking note of what’s in our makeup bags. Instead, we add more stuff into it everyday, so we end up running around with more things than we actually need (not to mention a really heavy bag).

So if you’re struggling to declutter your cosmetic pouch, we have five tips for you!

The easiest way to stop yourself from bringing so many items around is to limit the space in your makeup pouch. You’ll be more likely to notice how much makeup you’re carrying around when you try to add something to your bag and it won’t zip shut!

How many lip colours can you wear in a day? Three or four? No way. Stop kidding yourself and take a serious look at the number of lip items you carry in your bag. (I know because I am guilty of this too.) Limit yourself to one lipstick in your makeup pouch, two if you are going for a gradient lip, or if you wish to change your lip colour for a party after work. The same goes for any other makeup item, just choose one of each.

You don’t have to pack everything, just choose what you think you’ll really be needing throughout the day. For example, if you tend to get really oily in the T-zone, pack some blotting sheets or compact powder. If your complexion is relatively clear, then you probably won’t need a concealer – leave that out.

If you have read our tips on how to pack your travel bag, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of sample sizes and multi-purpose items. One item that I carry everyday is the Instant Mineral Powder SPF45 from Peter Thomas Roth. With this, I don’t have to worry about how to reapply sunscreen over makeup. The powder is tinted and it keeps my T-zone matte.

The Mai Couture powdered blotting sheets also come in handy for outdoor parties in our humid weather. While powdered blotting sheets are not new, these come in all sorts of colours, so you can even touch up your bronzer or blush when it fades (and control oily skin at the same time!).

Challenge yourself and go WITHOUT a makeup bag. Instead, reuse one of your old makeup fabric cases. My favourite is the velvet pouch that comes with every Chanel complexion makeup item. It’s great for separating your makeup from the leather goods in your bag so that they won’t get scratched. Just fit your lip balm and lipstick in the pouch for touching up throughout the day, and you’re ready to go! You can also use old fabric spectacle pouches, the microfibre can help take away fingerprints on glossy packaging too.
