Keeping brassy yellow tones out of bleached blonde hair keeps it looking fresh with that ‘just-coloured’ look. The best way to achieve this is with a purple or silver-toned shampoo. However, mishaps with at-home revitalising treatments can leave tresses looking less than professional.

Cover Media caught up with colour specialist Karine Jackson who shared her advice for avoiding at home dye disasters.

“If you want to tone down the yellow leave your toner on for just five minutes. Alternatively use Organic Colour Systems Silver Shampoo once a week to keep brassiness at bay. If your stylist lifts your colour enough the need for a toner is minimised dramatically. Cleanse the hair prior to colouring with a cleansing shampoo to remove any impurities,” she explained.

Paul Dennison, the current British Colour Technician of the Year, also shared his expert tips.

“With platinum blonde being a key look this season you really need to make sure the yellow tones are kept at bay. Swimming, sun exposure and not using the correct shampoo can cause hair to lose its tone quicker,” Paul explained. “Using the Shu Uemura Colour Lustre Cool Blonde revitalising balm in conjunction with either L’Oreal Professionnel Series Expert Silver Shampoo or Shine Blonde Shampoo will prevent this from happening. Also be sure to ask your colourist to tone your highlights or a full head of bleach – this will add a new dimension to your look. Having said that don’t be too scared of over toning as pastel shades are still very much en vogue too!”

Cover Media put some of the haircare treatments available to combat brassiness to the test. We rate Fudge Violet shampoo as the ultimate tone corrector, but be warned – leave for too long and you’ll find you have a lilac tinge to your mane.

Bumble and Bumble have a sulphate free line of products in their Colour Minded range that gently work to preserve the condition of your hair. The creamy shampoo and conditioner protect and prolong colour while the styling products prevent the breakage and heat damage that bleached hair can be more susceptible too.

Both L’Oreal Professionnel Silver shampoo and John Freida Purple shampoo also do a good job for a reasonable priced product. © Cover Media
