Old habits die hard. From the way we apply our foundation to the brand of mascara we use, we often find ourselves sticking to the same old favourites. I know for one that I’m guilty of not switching up my makeup style every once in a while.

Makeup is very much like skin care; our skin is constantly changing, so we need to adapt our makeup to these changes too. I met up with Alexandre Ciancio, Laura Mercier’s national makeup artist (trained by Laura herself, no less) to discover five unique ways that we can use our everyday staple items.

Watch how Alexandre use regular makeup tools to make the best out of your makeup.

1. ROLL IT
Forget patting on your foundation like Ariel Lin, Alexandre says you should apply your powder foundation on a sponge and roll it onto your face. This will allow the foundation to blend into your skin well. For a natural finish, use a kabuki brush to buff over the foundation afterwards. Alexandre is using Laura Mercier’s Smooth Finish Foundation Powder with a dry sponge to achieve this effect.

2. DOUBLE UP THE CONCEALER
I’ve written about how much I love the coverage of Laura Mercier’s High Coverage Concealer. To make the best out of this product, Alexandre says you should always warm a creamy concealer on your hand before applying it onto the face with a brush and then blending with your fingers. This will allow the concealer to “melt” with ease into the desired areas.

For concealers with thicker textures, you can even choose to use them as a primer for your eyes! After you’re done blending concealer onto your face, simply dab a small amount over your eyelids.

3. HIT THE RIGHT SPOT
If you always find yourself applying your blusher way off the mark, smiling helps. Plant your blusher in the highest spot of your cheeks (when you smile) and blend with your fingers. For a multipurpose blusher, Laura Mercier’s Crème Cheek Colour doubles up as an eyeshadow and lip tint too.

4. LINE IT WITH SHADOW
You don’t necessarily have to use an eyeliner to give your eyes extra definition. Eyeshadows work just as well. Simply use a damp brush and pick a preferred eyeshadow colour, and line your eyes the same way you would with an eyeliner. In opting for eyeshadow liner, you get to play and mix your very own eyeliner colour ‒ no more boring black!

5. COAT THE TOP
Forget brushing your lashes the normal boring way. Swipe your mascara wand from the top downward, as this will help brush away and catch any eyeshadow fallout. According to Alexandre, doing this will also help to curl your lashes even further.
