1. Do it at a salon

There are trained professionals at salons who know what to do with your hair. This beats a DIY job done while following instructions on YouTube videos made by people whose credentials you aren’t even sure of.

Another benefit of investing in a salon treatment: You can get a second opinion if you can’t decide what colours to choose. This is the ideal option, especially when you have to bleach your hair – bleaching strips moisture from your hair, but professionals can minimise the damage.

Wynn Chew, a hair educator at Joico, Shiseido Singapore, advises, “It is best to bleach your hair at a salon, where there are proper pre- and post-bleaching treatments.” Certain treatments that help the colours to stay on for as long as possible are only offered at salons, such as Joico’s H.K.P. Liquid Protein Chemical Perfector for pre-bleaching and Joico’s K-PAK 4-step post-bleach treatment.

2. Use the right products to colour

It is important to use the appropriate products when colouring your hair. Be careful as some dyes could be more harmful to your hair than others – or emit an overpowering ammonia smell that’ll make the entire experience that much more unpleasant. Wynn recommends Joico’s new LumiShine Repair+ Permanent Creme, which strengthens your hair while adding the desired colour. Wynn explains, “It uses arginine (a protein) as a replacement for ammonia, helping to replenish nutrients and allowing the colour to last longer.” The dye also has a subtly invigorating scent of bergamot, sandalwood and iris that lingers in your hair even after you wash it. And with 52 Asian-friendly shades to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

3. Aftercare

It is important to take good care of your hair after dyeing it – which may be especially high maintenance after bleaching. Purchasing the right shampoo and conditioner to reduce the fading and damage while keeping hair shiny and manageable is absolutely vital. Ask your hairstylist for advice if you are not sure which one is best for your hair. Wynn suggests checking out the K-PAK Color Therapy shampoo and conditioner if your hair has been dyed using more than one colour. Otherwise, using the right shampoo – such as purple shampoo – is essential in ensuring your locks remain smooth and shiny.

Joico’s new LumiShine Repair+ Permanent Creme comes in 52 shades and three intensifiers. For more information, visit www.joico.com.
