Meant for each other
We were introduced by a mutual friend, who left halfway through the dinner she’d invited us both to. Things were a little awkward, but we kept the conversation going. Thereafter, we communicated through whatsapp and dated. We’re very comfortable with each other and he makes me laugh most of the time.
The big question
It happened at Keppel Bay, where we had our first date. There wasn’t much of a surprise element because I knew exactly what he was going to do after dinner that night. He’d planned a sunset proposal but we only reached the place at night. Still, he got down on one knee and proposed with the engagement ring we’d chosen together months ago. But he really moved me with a sincere speech he’d written himself.
Good food and good company
These were our top priorities. We had a cosy, comfortable wedding with our nearest and dearest – people we’re close with, or who have played important roles throughout our lives. It was nothing too elaborate, but lovely all the same. We had great jazz and blues tunes I’d personally selected as background music for the banquet, and three makeup booths for guests, who were all very happy with the looks they were given!
I teared up during the vows
I started getting emotional as I was getting ready in the hotel room; the thought of marrying the man I love really moved me. I was trying to control my tears when I walked into the solemnisation venue, but couldn’t when we read our vows and exchanged rings.
Weddings are tiring
We were exhausted! If I could relive the occasion, I would’ve spent more time enjoying the celebration and ambience, and especially the fairy lights at the banquet.
Don’t be shy about getting help
Get a wedding planner if you can’t manage or are feeling overwhelmed or panicky. Instead of stressing yourself and loved ones, it’s better to leave it all to the experts to handle. That was one of the best decisions I made. Most of all, spend time making yourself happy and relaxing before the wedding day. And spend money on details guests will notice and appreciate. For instance, I made the stage decorations a top priority.

“When I saw him after the gatecrashing, I was like ‘wow that’s my husband!’ And I was over the moon when he got down on one knee to hand me my bridal bouquet,” says Jiahui.
