A Mayor’s Faves
Iyiannis Boutaris, mayor of Thessaloniki, feels that every corner of Greece has its attractions but his personal favourites are on the island of Santorini.
Akrotiri Archaeological Site
This site is truly magical. One can actually walk through ruins which were preserved under lava following a volcanic eruption around 1700BC.
Domaine Sigalas
This vineyard in Oia produces some of the most unique wines – from the grapes of basket-shaped Assyrtiko vines – in the world.
Vlychada Beach
Although Santorini is not really known for its beaches, this place on the south-east part of the island – with its moonscape-like terrain carved by the wind through the years – is unforgettable.
The Tsitouras Collection
Santorini has more than 20 world-class small luxury hotels overlooking the caldera. The Tsitouras Collection is one of the oldest, with five lavish suites furnished with antiques and works of art.
