So you’ve probably heard of glass skin, a hot K-beauty fad that’s making it rounds on the Internet. But have you heard of honey skin?

No, it’s not about using honey-based products (we thought so, too), but everything to do with achieving that dewy, super hydrated complexion that – yep, you guessed it – emulates the sheen of honey. Talk about getting the ultimate bridal glow.

What’s the difference? Glass skin promotes radiance and texture of the skin, while honey skin places emphasis on a healthy glow and a complexion that’s plump with moisture. Just search #꿀피부 on Instagram and you’ll know what we mean. Here, we take you through the steps for nailing that covetable shine.

Porcelain Balance Daily Cleansing Gel, $59 for 120 ml

Cleanse and exfoliate

Any skincare regiment starts with a consistent cleansing routine – the famous double-cleanse works by removing makeup, icky grime and sebum as well as SPF (Personally, methinks a quick once over with micellar water doesn’t quite cut it) with a cleansing oil, or micellar water until there isn’t a trace of makeup left on your cotton pad. Follow up by massaging a water-based cleanser into your skin to really remove impurities from your pores, then rinse off.

Your skin will benefit from regular exfoliation too. Doing so sloughs away dead skin cells and helps products penetrate your skin better. Facial or grainy scrubs might further irritate sensitive skin (and cause micro tears!), so consider gentle exfoliating peels instead.

Estelle & Thild BioCleanse Multi-Action Facial Toner, $36

Tone it up

What toner does: it restores skin’s pH balance (which can be upset by the alkaline nature of soap), tightens pores, and removes impurities, as well as softens the skin. Look out for ones with hydrating or brightening properties.

Clarins Double Serum, $125 for 30ml

Don’t forget your serums and essences

This is the game changer that elevates your skin from good to honey status. While essences were traditionally more lightweight than serum and used before the latter, the lines are pretty much blurred now, and both contain high concentrations of active ingredients that nourish the skin.

A deeply hydrating essence or serum will help in achieving that dewiness. If you’re looking to address parched skin woes, look out for ones with hyaluronic acid to really boost hydration.

IDS Intensive Moisturizer, $100 for 30ml

Moisturise

Since moisturisers are generally heavier with a thicker consistency compared to serums and essences, they should be applied after the latter. The trick is not to slather it on but rather to smooth a light layer across your face. Too much and you run the risk of clogging your pores instead.

Laneige Water Bank Double Layering Oil, $50 for 50ml

Facial oils

Another crucial step for honey skin? Facial oils. Oils are essentially emollients (ingredients that soften skin, and create a protective and moisture-sealing barrier.) And while they don’t necessarily deliver hydration like good ol’ hyaluronic acid and glycerin do, they help create that radiant and satiny smooth texture on the top layer of your skin. As a general rule, this goes over your moisturiser as oil can penetrate the moisturiser but not vice versa, and its occlusive nature also seals in moisture.

And of course…

Don’t forget your sunscreen! They act as a a shield against harmful UV rays, help slow down the development of premature aging skin, reduces the formation of sun spots, and help diminish blotchiness from sun exposure.
