Discovering local delicacies is part of a successful trip, but holidaying in certain destinations can translate into unwanted pounds.

Holiday spots that can make you fat
On a diet? If you’re visiting these countries, salads may be the easiest healthy food option

Here, a British study by travel operator Thomas Cook reveals which holiday spots are likely to make you fat.

1. Greece
Greece and its Mediterranean food arrive as the heavyweight champion with an average of 3.3lb (1.49kg) gained while visiting the country. The country’s diet is based on a variety of grains, olive oil, fish and meat. The diet also includes rich desserts and pastries, often sweetened with honey.

2. Turkey
According to the research, the average visitor to Turkey puts on 3lb (1.36kg) during a 10-day stay in the country. What is to blame? Probably the national delicacies including those baklavas or sweet pastries which are a source of unwanted calories.

3. Portugal
Portugal came in third place with an average 2.9lb (1.31kg) after tourists overindulge in tasty holiday treats such as rice pudding, green wine and the famous Pastel de Nata or custard tart.

4. North America
The US, renowned for big portions, fast food and one of the biggest obesity rates in the world, came in fourth place.

5. Anywhere sunny and easily accessible, like Singapore?
The research suggests that holidaying in sunny climates with great food and less physical activity are among the conditions which result in piling on pounds. The criteria listed sure sounds like Singapore to us; more reason to take that walk in between our meals!

Surprisingly, it is men who put on most weight. On average they take an extra 5.5lb (2.5 kg) back home whereas women take only around 1.5lb (0.7kg).

Where to visit to lose weight
The survey adds that those wanting to lose some weight should head to Ireland, Canada or Germany, where the local food is perhaps not as inviting to foreign visitors. — AFP RELAXNEWS
