For Chanel, chance is never a matter of coincidence. In fact, the brand’s founder, Gabrielle Chanel, said that chance was her soul. If you believe in seizing every chance you’re given and creating your own destiny, the latest interpretation of Chanel’s Chance fragrance is just for you.
Created in 2003, there have been four interpretations of Chance and this latest incarnation, Chance Eau Splendide, is a winning olfactory encounter, just like its predecessors.
Olivier Polge, Chanel’s in-house perfumer creator, says that each Chance fragrance is unique, but they all express the same state of mind.
“There is no common composition, but something along the lines of a feeling and an emotion that each fragrance expresses – something very lively and very direct,” he adds.
Olivier reveals that the creation of Chance Eau Splendide started with a playful and carefree state of mind that characterises the identity of Chance fragrances. “I wanted to give material form to this olfactory universe tinged with freshness and optimism, through the prism of new ingredients, as well as different notes and colours.”
The fruity-floral fragrance is sparkling and captivating. Olivier wanted to construct the scent’s characteristic freshness with an unchartered accord. The raspberry accord gives Chance Eau Splendide “a remarkable opening”, making it the most fruity in the line. The red fruit also creates a vivid impression and gives an immediate feeling of comfort.
The scent’s key ingredient, though, is rose geranium, some of which are produced in the brand’s own fields in Grasse, France.
“Floral notes are an integral part of the olfactory identity of Chance fragrances,” Olivier shares. “The use of rose geranium is a facet of this identity, and adds contrast to the fragrance so that it is fruity without being too sweet.
“It adds freshness and elegance to Chance Eau Splendide,” he continues. “This characteristic enabled me to balance the raspberry accord and its rose and violet facets, so that the fragrance is enveloping, yet remains fresh.”
Chance Eau Splendide also has cedar and white musk notes, adding both vibrant woody notes and a sophisticated touch of powdery iris. It’s a scent that’s full of surprises and is both playful and teasing. It’s for the bold woman who dares to seize every chance and who believes that the game is never over.
After pink, green, yellow and orange, this new incarnation of Chance is packaged in a purple bottle. Each colour is a facet of the scent’s personality and purple was chosen as it conveys the fresh and fruity impression of the raspberry accord, and also expresses the more mysterious and complex floral aspect of the fragrance.
“After completing the formula, we smelt the fragrance,” Olivier explains. “Purple came to mind naturally, almost instinctively. This shade is an element of continuity in the olfactory identity of Chance Eau Splendide, and allows the sensory experience to be prolonged.”
Olivier reveals that the idea of the brand’s fragrances is to bring out an emotion or an individual experience that resonates beyond gender and age. Each person has an intimate relationship with the fragrance they wear and deciding to wear a specific fragrance can depend on the season, moods and personal desires.
“A facet of joy and optimism dominates the Chance line, and Chance Eau Splendide in particular,” he says. “I enjoy being surprised by the people who wear the fragrances I create. I like to see these creations come to life on the street, sometimes in unexpected ways.”
