Concerns from fans and netizens poured in after reports revealed that Taiwanese singer Landy Wen, better known by her Chinese name Wen Lan, had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) following septic shock. The condition reportedly developed after she experienced severe abdominal pain, accompanied by symptoms including weakness, fever and a mild lung infection.
The 46-year-old had been suffering from persistent fever and abdominal pain since 14 May before being rushed to hospital after doctors discovered that her white blood cell count had risen to nearly three times the normal level. Two days later, Landy’s manager shared that she was conscious but still unable to keep food down. She has since been reported to be out of danger and is currently being cared for by her boyfriend Reno, alongside friends and family.
According to HealthXchange under SingHealth, sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s overwhelming inflammatory response to a severe infection. Common infections that can lead to sepsis include pneumonia and urinary tract infections. Rather than being directly caused by bacteria or germs themselves, sepsis occurs when chemicals released by the body in response to an infection trigger widespread inflammation. Since 2019, more than 5,000 deaths in Singapore have been linked to sepsis. Symptoms may include rapid breathing, an abnormal white blood cell count, an elevated heart rate, fever or unusually low body temperature.
Individuals with weakened immune systems may be at a higher risk of developing severe infections and sepsis. This can include those undergoing chemotherapy, using steroids or immunosuppressants following organ transplants, as well as people living with conditions such as HIV or diabetes.
What is septic shock?
When an underlying infection goes untreated or the body is unable to effectively fight it, sepsis can progress into septic shock — a severe and potentially life-threatening complication. Septic shock occurs when an infection causes a dangerous drop in blood pressure, reducing oxygen supply to vital organs. This can lead to organ failure, loss of consciousness and, in severe cases, death.
Recognising warning signs early and seeking medical attention when symptoms persist can make a crucial difference.
