It seems we can’t get enough of Korean food. Besides Korean fried chicken, Korean BBQ, and bibimbap, the country has also given us Korean army stew, which has been garnering quite a bit of attention on social media thanks to how epic and colossal it looks. The dish is so called as Koreans created it from ingredients left by the American military during the Korean War. They placed the leftover canned beans, spam and sausages into a spicy stew and made it their own.
The spicy stew usually comes in a large bubbling pot for sharing between two to three people. It is filled with ingredients we are very familiar with: spam (luncheon meat), sausages, tteokbokki (rice cake), tofu, canned beans, a mix of mushrooms, a medley of vegetables that can include cabbage, and instant noodles. These are all mixed in a spicy soup, usually a vegetable base one, and you have them with rice. There are shops out there that also top the stew with cheese, for an additional price.
There are not very many Korean restaurants that do it, and not everyone who does it does it well. So we’ve decided to put together a list of the best places to have this comforting hot pot.

Mainly known for their jjimdak (braised chicken), this new-ish restaurant is also popular for their army stew, which has a spicy kimchi stew base. Do top up the stew with mozzarella cheese for extra shiok factor.

Love the generous portions of ingredients in this, especially the enoki mushrooms that help to give an extra bite to the dish as they don’t get soft easily in the stew. The soup can be a little diluted for some, so if thicken it, ask for more chilli paste.

Do make reservations if you’re visiting this popular Korean restaurant. Their army stew is decent, with a spicy enough soup and good amount of ingredients. The only gripe? Not enough ramyeon!

Seoul Yummy has a number of outlets including Bugis+, ION Orchard, JEM, Junction 8, Marina Square, Square 2 and The Central. Go for the Original Army Stew with the typical ingredients, or choose to dress your stew up with octopus and other seafood or with assorted meat. All three options go for the same price.
