In a few days time, we will bid 2017 farewell and usher in the new year. This also means lots of countdown parties happening all over the island. But if you’re up for something different, or you’re a huge fan of Japanese culture, head over to Liang Court and celebrate the Japan New Year, an annual festival with its own customs but you get to acquaint yourself with them right here in Singapore.

From Dec 29, 2017 to Jan 7, 2018, the mall will be bringing a myriad of cultural performances and activities to you. These include the mochi pounding ceremony and the Kagami Biraki ceremony, a traditional practice where a sake barrel is opened. Not forgetting the little ones, Oshogatsu Cookie and Oshogatsu Sushi workshops will be held on Jan 6 and 7 for them to learn how to make yummy snacks.

Intricate balloon sculptures of iconic Japan New Year figures such as Daruma and Maneki Neko can be found at the atrium too, so bring your girlfriends along to get some photos taken. In addition, you can stand a chance to win $500 worth of AsiaMalls voucher by guessing the number of balloons used to make the sculptures. Simply look out for Liang Court’s Japan New Year post, and upload the photos taken with the sculptures in the comment section along with your guess.

In conjunction with the festival, MEIDI-YA Supermarket will also be holding their Japan New Year Fair where you can find Japan New Year related confectionary, collectibles and souvenirs, amongst other Japanese festive gifts.
