Ever since Chanel invented the ultra dark burgundy shade Rouge Noir for nails, almost-black nails have been considered both sexy and trendy. As a matter of fact, the dark nail varnish has become increasingly popular in corporate offices that don’t normally condone fashion nails. Not ‘goth’, as black might be, nor slutty, as red might be, the almost-black shade is something wearable in between. No wonder beauty companies and business women alike are going crazy about the nail trend.

This month, several brands are introducing cousins of the Rouge Noir in their fall collections. Best-selling American brand Essie is presenting the Carry On collection with five muddy dark shades and a lighter grey-pink, all named after handbags. When coating twice the shades become as dark and moody as a Bergman movie.

Illamasqua’s Theatre of the Nameless collection.

British brand Illamasqua have created even darker nail varnishes with its Theatre of the Nameless collection, where four shades (stone brown, bottle green, dark cerise and blue violet) are leading to a darker place, for our hands at least. All four shades are working very well together so do try a pop art inspired side-by-side or a Funky French style.

Nail polishes from Yves Saint Laurent’s The Black Collection.

The darkest mind of all is found at Yves Saint Laurent. The fashion house is going all-in on the almost-black trend, naming the winter collection New Blacks. Here we find nail varnishes based on black but with a hint of colourful shimmer. The three shades are absolutely irresistible and will surely be the hottest trend this winter for lawyers, bankers and other corporate business women. © Cover Media
