Singapore Airlines (SIA) customers can now book Grab rides when travelling to the airport in six South-east Asian countries using the SingaporeAir mobile app, with GrabRewards points that can be converted into KrisFlyer miles.

The airline and the ride-hailing giant announced their partnership yesterday.

With immediate effect, SIA passengers using the app are given an option to book a Grab ride to the airport – in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam – seven days before their scheduled flight.

By selecting this option, customers are directed to the Grab app, where they can choose to order a Grab ride to the airport on-demand or in advance.

The airport will be automatically listed as the destination, with the user filling in the pick-up point and desired time.

SIA’s KrisFlyer frequent flyer members and those enrolled in Grab’s GrabRewards programmes also enjoy additional benefits, and GrabRewards members can convert their GrabRewards points into KrisFlyer miles.

GrabPay head Jason Thompson said Grab is honoured to serve as Singapore Airlines’ land transport partner in South-east Asia.

He said: “We are constantly making the Grab platform more rewarding for our customers. With GrabRewards, a dollar spent on Grab is more valuable than a dollar spent in cash. By integrating Grab’s and SIA’s loyalty programmes, customers can look forward to using their points when they plan for their next holiday.”

Transport researcher Park Byung Joon of the Singapore University of Social Sciences said both companies stand to gain from the partnership.

As “a prestigious airline, one of the top three in the world”, SIA’s brand image may rub off on Grab, which rightly or wrongly, isn’t seen to be as slick as its closest competitor Uber.

Dr Park added: “As for Singapore Airlines, it will have access to more people because Grab is serving far more people than SIA. In terms of potential customers, this is not a bad deal for SIA.”

To promote the partnership, the first 5,000 customers will receive GrabPay Credits worth S$10 in their Grab account for bookings made through the SingaporeAir mobile app for Grab rides in Singapore.
