From The Straits Times    |

I’ve never been to Burger & Lobster in London. I’ve heard about it, of course – how can I not? It’s practically a requirement for every Singaporean to wait in line for hours and to take lots of pictures of the crustacean – but when I travel all the way to Europe, the last thing I want to do is end up at a tourist trap with dozens of fellow Singaporeans (I’m looking at you, The Breakfast Club). Show me where the locals eat, damn it!

Well, it looks like I’d soon get my chance without having to fly 15 hours across the globe – the first Asian outpost of Burger & Lobster has officially opened at Resorts World Genting! Frankly, it’s a surprising move because 1) a first Asian outpost of anything that’s not in Hong Kong, Tokyo or Singapore?! and 2) Resorts World Genting?!

But I’m not being fair. Turns out, Resorts World Genting has been quietly revamping itself in the last couple of years to shed its squeaky-clean, families-only image. Besides new hotel facilities, a number of shopping and entertainment highlights have also been added to the mix, including two shopping malls, a premium outlet and the star attraction: a 20th Century Fox World theme park, the first of its kind in the world and featuring rides based on movies like Alien vs Predator, Titanic and Planet of the Apes.

But back to Burger & Lobster. Like its original predecessor, the Genting outlet serves only three items: a 10z burger (made from halal-grade beef from Stanbroke, Australia), a whole lobster (imported live from Nova Scotia, and served steamed, grilled or in a chilli sauce), or a lobster roll (available in three flavours). The chilli version is of course, a take on the chilli crab, and is an Asian exclusive.

If you’re concerned about the quality of these crustaceans being affected by the long travel time, Resorts World Genting reassures that “lobsters are kept in a custom-made seawater system where they are carefully monitored to ensure optimal conditions at all times, [… and that they] remain plump, juicy, and in top form”.

Motorino pizza Genting

And if lobsters aren’t your thing, there are two other brand-name imported concepts to satiate those tummies at.

At Cafes Richard (also a first international foray for the French coffee roaster), you get the full-service, Parisian-style bistro experience. Coffee bean selection includes Perle Noire, the brand’s exclusive 100% Arabica house blend, and a special Sumatra Orang Utan blend, specifically selected for its sustainability efforts in reducing farming that’s destroyed the natural habitats of the endangered orang utans.

Otherwise, it’s pizza from Brooklyn icon Motorino (available in Singapore too, but hey). Motorino’s pies are done Neapolitan-style, and cooked in a wood-fired oven. The resulting pizza has a lovely smoky aroma, with a soft and chewy crust characteristic of pies from Naples. Order the traditonal, fuss-free Margherita for a complete Neapolitan experience.
