Andy Warhol predicted that in the future, “everybody” would have their 15 minutes of international fame. With Twitter, Youtube and other social media websites drawing the limelight to just about everyone, that sentiment seems even more pertinent.
While enduring fame is much more difficult to achieve, Warhol’s influence on art, design and popular culture is almost indelible today.
Even viewers unfamiliar with Warhol’s world would have seen his popular prints imitated in commercials, photography and other media; quite fittingly so, since many of Warhol’s paintings are creative reproductions of original newspaper adverts. Thus the inspiration for the title of this Asian exhibition tour: Andy Warhol: 15 minutes Eternal.
Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal at the ArtScience Museum
At its first stop in Singapore, visitors can expect to see over 260 artworks at Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal. The exhibition will later make its way to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo.
Through this retrospective art exhibition, you’ll see works from an artist who could “discover something amazing, even in a cup or a bottle”, says Lise Macdonald, curator of the ArtScience Museum. Indeed, some of Warhol’s most popular works are re-representations of humble household items like, most famously, the Campbell soup can.
Certainly, the Marilyn Monroe prints, celebrity paintings, photographs and Campbell soup-inspired works are displayed here. However there are also some unexpected, more obscure works that stand out when set against Warhol’s more flamboyant and popular pieces.
Eric Shiner, the director of The Andy Warhol Museum, hopes that the exhibition will encourage more people to see Warhol as being far “more than a soup can painter or a Marilyn Monroe painter”; and even surprise Warhol fans with new insights into his work.
The museum director thinks that this interactive exhibition is a “perfect venue” for an introduction to Warhol. People will be able to view the artist’s expansive oeuvre from the time of his earliest illustrations to his final art series, The Last Supper.
The Silver Factory at Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal
If you’re expecting rope barricades and glass cases at this Warhol showcase, think again. Display touches like a shelf of shoes in candy colours and a room decked out in aluminium foil screens (featured above) simulate Warhol’s vibrant world.
The exhibition’s on-site photo booth even makes a fun reference to the artist’s self-portraits. Here, visitors get to pose for playful snaps with wigs and other props.
With younger visitors catered for – think specially-positioned paintings, a “tunnel” for kids and more child-friendly features – families can easily enjoy this exhibition too. Perhaps it is as the artist would have intended it to be; an inclusive light-hearted exhibition, with a touch of whimsy.
