Spider-Man: Homecoming, out in cinemas 6 July

Calling it right now: Movie producers have clearly decided that 2017 is the year of the superhero. We were tickled pink by Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earlier this year – and need we remind you how inspired we were by Gal Gadot’s success in the equally stunning DC movie, Wonder Woman?

Now taking his swing at the Marvel screen is Tom Holland, the third face of Peter Parker in the past 15 years and, from what we gather, the most successful yet.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming that’s out today, Spider-Man is being mentored by Iron Man, who will of course be played by Robert Downey Jr., following his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in Captain America: Civil War. Fair warning: Don’t expect to see radioactive spider bites or any of his backstory. (Though to be honest, we’ve seen it enough times.) We’re going right into the action as Peter Parker attempts to balance his crime-fighting alter-ego and his identity as a 15-year-old student.

And yes Marvel fans, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) will be in there, too.

War of the Planet of the Apes, out in cinemas 13 July

Or as I call it, #TeamApe vs #TeamHuman.

If you’ve been following the Planet of the Apes reboot series since its first installment in 2011 (how has it been six years?!), then you’ll know this is the exciting finale of the trilogy that will most definitely include loads of action. The movie begins two years after the sequel (which premiered three years ago but we’re not counting…) where Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) will lead his army of apes in the penultimate battle against the ruthless Colonel, who’s played by Woody Harrelson.

Trust me when I say that I cannot be more excited. The movie isn’t just a war between humans and apes but will include internal conflict – and betrayal – brewing amongst the primates – as every good movie should, really.

Wish Upon, out in cinemas 13 July

Even if I may never understand your love for being spooked, I am here to play enabler to your not-so-guilty pleasure. Horror film Wish Upon comes out next Thursday and is every parent’s nightmare.

In it, Jonathan Shannon (played by Ryan Philippe) gifts an old music box to his 17-year-old daughter, Clare (Joey King) which we know means trouble because, if we’ve learnt anything from Annabelle, it’s that antiques are always cursed. This music box in particular promises to grant seven wishes…for a (bloody) price, of course.

That’s where we’ll leave it. Although, if we could venture a suggestion, this is why we should always watch Disney movies – Aladdin taught us early on that wishes just aren’t the way to your best life.

Why this particular horror flick? Well, it’s directed by none other than John R. Leonetti, the director responsible for cult favourites Annabelle and The Conjuring.

Bonus? Ki Hong Lee is starring in it. If you’ve never heard or seen him, Google him right now. And while you’re at it, please check out our Netflix guide because you’ve clearly been neglecting yourself of some quality television series!

Dunkirk, out in cinemas 20 July

One Direction may have broken hearts all over the world when they announced their “hiatus” in 2015 but clearly Harry Styles hasn’t let that Drag Him Down. Heh.

In all seriousness, the singer has not only released an album earlier this year but has been getting his acting chops on in the star-studded film Dunkirk, in which he stars alongside Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy. The World War II epic is a recount of the real-life Battle of Dunkirk, and will reportedly “contain little dialogue” which might be a hint at the action and suspense it promises to deliver.

As if that’s not reason enough to watch, the movie was directed by Christopher Nolan so we know it’s going to be intense.

Baby Driver, out in cinemas 20 July

This movie might not be as on-the-radar as the others, but this is definitely one worthy of mention (and your weekend time).

Why? Baby Driver might be the movie of the month for all you comedy lovers. Directed by Edgar Wright, the genius who brought us Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Marvel’s Ant-Man, the movie has already received some pretty rave reviews (yes, even on Rotten Tomatoes).

Baby Driver might sound like a slapstick reboot of the Vin Diesel movie The Nanny, but trust me, it’s anything but. The action comedy stars Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort, who plays the protagonist, a getaway driver named Baby who works for veteran criminal mastermind Doc (played by Kevin Spacey).

Completing the lineup of A-list celebrities starring in the film are Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Lily James.

Valerian, out in cinemas 20 July

Hottie alert! This film will definitely be pleasing on the eyes (you’re welcome). Sharing centre stage in this comic-book-turned-movie film are stars Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan. True to a sci-fi adventure movie, the duo is tasked with maintaining order in Alpha, a bustling metropolis (hm, Singapore, anyone?) that is under threat from “a dark force”.

While we’ve yet to receive advance reviews on the film, director Luc Besson’s track record seems promising, especially if you enjoyed the cult favourite The Fifth Element. And of course, the eye candy running across the screen promise to make this aesthetically pleasing to boot.
