Welcome to the gym of the future.

Virgin Active has landed in Singapore, setting up a three-level gym in the heart of the CBD at One Raffles Place on October 11 2013. This new kid on the block is going to give the rest of the gyms a run for its money with its personalised experience and futuristic facilities.

Let’s start with the equipment: top of the line Artis Android fitness machines. Each piece is designed for connectivity. You can call your mother on Skype, access your favourite websites and stalk people on Facebook all while running on the treadmill. If your gym buddy can’t make it, the strength machines will even count the number of reps you do and alert whether you are working out too quickly or slowly. The best part is that you can track your progress, not only for that particular session, but thanks to the Artis equipment’s cloud technology, you can access your own training log wherever you are in the world.

Spin classes also take on a whole new dimension at Virgin Active. Here, you don’t have to stare at the instructor’s face for the entire class – besides quick-tempo music blasting, the spin studio has immersive digital landscapes, meaning the graphics projected on the walls actually changes.

Besides the traditional hot yoga classes, try out the latest fad in yoga – anti-gravity yoga. Run-of-the-mill poses are made challenging when you are suspended from the ceiling in silk hammocks.

Those looking to maximise their lunchtime exercise regime, head to the Thirty TryHit training zone. Based on the principles of high intensity interval training, think Cross Fit, you will follow a series of exercises that changes every week.

After a tough workout, head to the Relax and Recovery zone that features a salt room with ionised salts to aid in skin rejuvenation and purify one’s respiratory system. There’s also sleep pods where you can steal a 20-minute power nap to recharge yourself in the middle of the day.

If you are a commitment phobe, Virgin Active won’t tie you down with a long-term package. Besides a one-time joining fee, the flexible memberships are on a fortnightly basis.

Virgin Active Raffles Place is at Level 5 to 7 One Raffles Place Tower 2. Take a tour of the Virgin Active Raffles Place before its official opening on October 9 and 10 2013.
