One of the first things that people notice is your set of teeth. Not only are your teeth essential for you to talk and eat, they are also a symbol of good health and a mark of confidence. Who doesn’t want a gleaming white smile?

While there are the oft-cited teeth whitening methods like whitening toothpastes, mouthwashes and professional treatments, there are also other simpler everyday habits and things you can do to keep your pearly whites in tip-top form. Here are 5 simple things you can do to have a whiter set of teeth.

 

Out with the old, in with the new

One of the simplest ways to banish stains is to toss out your old toothbrush every three months or when you notice that the bristles of the toothbrush are worn out and frayed. If the bristles on your toothbrush is frayed and bent, they wouldn’t be able to clean your teeth as effectively.

Also, if you’ve been under the weather or have been storing your toothbrush in a closed container, consider replacing your toothbrush sooner to prevent the bacteria from transferring to your teeth.

 

Paint the town red

Like a whitening treatment in a tube, applying a blue-toned red lipstick on your lips is the fastest and easiest way to create the illusion of gleaming white teeth. On the colour wheel, blue and yellow sit across from each other, so blue hues helps to cancel out yellow tones when juxtaposed together.

Curb your sweet tooth

Here’s another reason for you to keep your hands off the cookie jar. A diet high in sugar has not only been linked to diabetes, weight problems and acne – it also supports the growth of the Streptococcus Mutans bacteria that causes plaque and gingivitis. If you do consume a sugary treat, make sure you brush your teeth soon after you eat.

 

Wake up and smell the coffee

If you are a regular coffee drinker, chances are you would experience some form of discolouration on your teeth due to thinning enamel and or/staining.

The good news is – these stains are extrinsic stains that can be removed by getting your teeth cleaned every three months or so. If you need to have your morning coffee, do so with a straw and try to drink more water to negate the staining effect of the beverage.

 

An apple a day keeps plaque away

A diet loaded with fruits and vegetables is not only good for your body and health but also your teeth. Just like a toothbrush, crunch and firm fruits and vegetables like apples and carrot help to rub plaque away as they are eaten.

For maximum result, try to have a crunchy fruit or vegetable when you’re done with your meal if you don’t know whether you are able to brush your teeth right after you eat.
