Along with durian and celery, oysters have to rank as one of the top polarizing foods, with opinions ranging from “you’re totally missing out” to the idea of it being consumed an unfathomable one. Love it or hate it, we believe that one can only truly expand the horizon of one’s palate if every food is given a fair shot, and the much-maligned oyster is a great dish that deserves a second chance at impressing you. So head down to these joints that serve the freshest oysters and who knows, you may find yourself the next oyster convert. Go forth and conquer, we say—the world is your oyster.

Oyster fanatics (especially those residing in the West) will swear by the quality and freshness of Greenwood’s oysters. Tucked away in the buzzing enclave of Greenwood Avenue in Bukit Timah, this seafood purveyor and diner is fast carving out a reputation as an oyster haven, and its Oyster Tuesdays—where selected oysters go for as low as $1.50 each—have seen it being marked on the event calendars of their oyster-mad patrons. Other noteworthy dishes to go with the oysters will be the sashimi platter and the Chargrilled European Monkfish as and when it is in season.

Emitting the charm of the famous Tsujiki Fish Market, Oceans of Seafood allows you to dine amidst the set-up of a fish market surrounded by fresh catch from the sea. As Pasar Bella is usually quiet on weekdays, you basically have the place to yourself where you can enjoy an icy platter of their oysters in quietude. Look out for their ongoing promotion – two oysters free for every 10 purchased – and watch their staff shuck them for you. They also share the premises with local seafood purveyor Ah Hua Kelong, so you can tip oyster shells in between tucking into your plate of la la in garlic chilli sauce.

5. Southbridge

What we simply dig about Southbridge’s plethora of oysters is the unique flavours they come dressed in. While a bit of lemon juice or a dash of tabasco is all that a good oyster needs, sometimes you just want to elevate your oyster-slurping experience with adventure and fun. At this chic rooftop bar, their oysters come in a myriad of interesting sauces like Umami (ponzu and yuzu), Unifeller (cheese and uni sabayon) and Pearls (with avrula caviar). We are smacking our lips as we type this.

Perched on the lofty 45th floor overlooking Raffles Place, Angie’s provides an avenue for the CBD working crowd to quell their oyster cravings. Besides the splendid panorama on offer, the oyster selection is the main draw. Served by the half dozen, we particularly love the sweet and meaty French Belon with its clean taste that requires just a light squeeze of lemon. Choose to enjoy your oysters as part of a sharing platter that includes Maine lobster, scallop ceviche, Hokkaido snow crab and shrimp cocktail. Seafood with a view—what’s not to love?

Address: 50 Raffles Place, #45-01, (S) 048623

If you are either a Japanophile or a seafood fan, we highly urge you to check out the trendy Emporium Shokuhin if you have yet to; firstly, because it is the largest and coolest Japanese supermarket bustling with anything Japanese, and also because of its glorious live seafood section where you can pick oysters from large glass tanks. With over 10 oyster varietals to choose from (our favourite Gillardeau among them), all you have to do is to sound out your picks to a staff, who would net them up and shuck them fresh for you to enjoy on the spot. Alternatively, you can indulge in them with a glass of champagne over at Umi+Vino Seafood Wine Bar.
