It has been a decade since the pastors’ daughter-turned-pop-sensation released her first hit single “I Kissed A Girl”. A slew of music accolades, award nominations, and billions of views on YouTube cemented her place in the public consciousness. When it comes to over-the-top wacky outfits and colourful props, Katy Perry sure knows how to make a statement. With the 33-year-old’s world tour to promote her fifth album, Witness underway, let’s take a moment to reminisce about some favourite costumes.
Remember her pre-platinum blonde pixie days? (aka when she was a dead ringer for actress Zooey Deschanel). When Katy Perry first broke into the scene with chart-topping hits, she was all about the retro, vintage pinup look, playful pumps, and Betty Boop lashes.
During the candy-coated California Dreams Tour, glittery costumes aplenty. The pop princess had 15 outfit changes per show and a blue wig hardly looked out of place. It was also the year that Katy Perry voiced the role of Smurfette.
Another one from when she promoted cotton-candy summertime single "California Gurls” and wistfully romantic “Teenage Dream” from her third album. Visually, it was the stuff of pure sweet tooth fantasy. I mean her skirt literally consisted of cupcakes. Not to mention artist Will Cotton (artistic director of the “California Gurls” video) created a three-dimensional Candy Land game board out of real baked goods and sweets. Fun and edible, need we ask for more?
Roberto Cavalli has been quoted saying that he created the shimmering holographic micro top and miniskirt wanting something that allowed the singer to be mobile on stage. The showstopping number, trimmed with neon lights, was what she wore to open her Prismatic World Tour. Plus check out those LED lights on her ponytail.
Katy Perry looked ethereal in this whimsical haute couture butterfly-covered Valentino gown. She donned the frock on her Prismatic world tour, complete with a sunflower guitar and microphone stand for her acoustic set that consisted of “By the Grace of God”/“Thinking of You”, “The One That Got Away”, and “Unconditionally”.
Word is that growing up, Katy Perry never got to celebrate Halloween. Well, she is certainly making up for it now. If this get up is any indication, no festive season is off limits. Seriously, who needs a Christmas jumper when you can just wear a tree?
No prizes for guessing which hit single she’s performing here. This ensemble was designed by Todd Thomas, one of the creative minds behind the 2010 Victoria’s Secret Show. Over the years, this California girl has evolved from the cheeky cousin to the relatable big sister, and “Firework” was one of her earlier “motivational pep talks to herself”. Now dominating Twitter with 109 million followers, she must be doing something right.
Catch her live on April 8, 2018 at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Giveaway ends on March 18, 2018.
