Depression does ‘dizzy spells’ for Spring Summer 2013

Singapore fashion label Depression’s collection for Spring Summer 2013 entitled Blackout is less about lack of electricity and more about passing out from a “dizzy spell” say co-designers and owners Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh.

The collection has “odd-shaped pieces that mimic ‘bumps’ and ‘bruises’, while graphic prints in ‘motion blur’ recreate the moments before a person blacks out” apparently. While this may have been the inspiration, the realisation of the idea has manifested into a softly sculptural range with a definite “sci-fi” feel, the “bumps” becoming three-dimensional, pointed extensions to shoulders, “winged” hems on shorts and skirts and voluminous puffed-out external pockets.

Describing the colourways as “equestrian”, Depression’s version of this adjective is no where near similar to that used by more mainstream fashion labels. There are no earthy tones of beige or brown, no brass detailing, in Depression’s equestrian world. No, a Depression “horse” is either a zebra – monochrome – or a unicorn (yes, a unicorn) – neon brights and dreamy blues.

While the concepts are as nutty as ever, the Depression designers have never been mainstream after all, the resulting collection is one of its most wearable yet. The brand’s signature unisex calling card has been translated into more fitted, less unstructured, looks for Spring Summer 2013.

The universal printed tights – available in both colourways – can be worn by women under dresses and tunics, and by men under shorts – a super hot K-Pop menswear trend – or long, tunic-style tees and sleeveless shirts.

Alongside the more adventurous looks are nicely cut trousers, city shorts for both men and women, cute mini dresses, interesting tees and even neat button-up shirts. You can, of course, add a visored-hooded cape to up the interest factor if you want to, though, offering a whole new perspective on office-to-club wear.

Once again, Depression’s shoes and accessories, are the stand-out pieces of its new collection. Rather amazingly this is only the third season for Depression’s shoes but the evolution of a distinctive style continues.

Unisex flatform pump and loafer styles anchor the Spring Summer 2013 shoe range, with a few new, flatter styles echoing the general shoe trend towards thinner soles. The rounded pointed toes remain, but the detailing has become more delicate and emphasis has been placed on the heel of the uppers rather than across the instep in previous designs.

Depression’s bags for SS13 have moved away from the clutch style towards a squared-off tote; yes the classic shape is everywhere – another on-trend look for SS13 across the board – but the addition of “metal” plates and rivets or image patches adds interest to the bags.

Overall, Depression Spring Summer 2013 appears to be a more cohesive and wearable collection, marking the label’s growth which has been highlighted in 2012 with not only invitations to show in Tokyo and Seoul, but has also seen its shoes picked up by major international shopping site Solestruck and both accessories and ready-to-wear sold at outlets around the world.

It’s great to see the growth in this Singapore label from the perspective of not only its business but, more importantly, in its aesthetic; Depression’s future is looking bright.

The Spring Summer 2013 Blackout collection will be available from January 2013, with the complete collection in store by March 2013; shoes and bags will be available in March 2013.
