So we had the 90s mom jeans hype when everyone decided to swap their zero-stretch jeans with looser, baggier options. And then there were the bell-bottoms you wore circa 1970 that bounced back to fashion. So what’s the latest denim redux now?

It is safe to say that denim pieces are a staple in everyone’s wardrobe and the popular material has also been through several updates (and throwbacks). So it’s time to give your wardrobe an update this season with the new denim trends from Net-A-Porter.

Reigning as the must-have silhouette, the straight-leg jean is reworked for S/S ’18 in stiff denim for a structured fit, while 90s signatures make another comeback. Indigo and white denim are the washes to know, with key details like contrast stitching giving them a contemporary edge.

How to master head-to-toe denim now: Tailoring and meticulous cuts are key. Got the basics down? Here, we break it down further.

1. The Straight Leg Jean

The must-have silhouette of F/W ’17 – the straight leg – returns in rigid denim for an edgier update. One of our favourites are from cult denim label Off-White.

Balenciaga’s flattering faded jeans made from Japanese denim and Saint Laurent’s subtle distressing on a classic high-rise fit also gets our vote for oozing 00s cool.

2. 90s Denim

Paying homage to the 90s this season, brands are now reworking denim into statement pieces.

Los Angeles-based brand Tre is all about interchangeable wardrobe staples while Goldsign is inspired by the simplicity of 90s fashion with a focus on creating well-crafted, minimalist denim. Grlfnd denim, also new to the site, offers straight cut with frayed slit hems.

This season, refined silhouettes are one of the ways to coordinate denim. Jonathan Simkhai’s eye for strong silhouettes is clear in his denim jacket-and-jeans combination while under-the-radar Korean brand We11 Done proves that light washes can make you look uber sophisticated.

4. Indigo denim

With ultraviolet being Pantone’s colour of choice in 2018, it is only fitting that the shade du jour for denim would be indigo, a rich, deep hue that is a mix of blue and purple.

From The Row to Prada and even Khaite, brands are all championing inky blue washes with contrast top-stitching.

5. White and off-white jeans

Khaite and Goldsign create effortlessly cool variations in low-slung, well-tailored fits, while Simon Miller’s sturdy denim jacket keeps the look fresh with a cropped silhouette and contrasting tan stitching.

Uneven hems on Mother Denim’s cropped flares instantly toughens up the hue and the slouchy boyfriend silhouette is sharpened with sturdier pure cotton on Saint Laurent’s white jeans.
