A touch (okay, it was more than just a touch) of sparkle livened up many a toe during the Fall/Winter 17′ showcases. Chanel was first with its glitter lunar knee boots. This was quickly followed by the likes of Marco de Vincenzo, Mary Katrantzou and Saint Laurent as each brand cooked up their own renditions of the glitter-covered shoe.

This, of course, delighted us like no other. Seriously, it was pretty darn tough to cull our top picks from the season’s bevy of glitter shoes just for this story — that’s how much we magpies love them.

And the trend came at just the right time too, with Christmas — a.k.a party ‘til you drop season —  approaching. Glittered shoes chose the right time to strike back, we’ll give that to ‘em (and all our year-end bonuses too, we’ll give it all).

If you’re one to veer on the safer side of dressing, this styling guide will lead the way to ‘all that glitters’ with tips and tricks as to not look too over-the-top. Get ready to sparkle ladies, here’s how you can embrace glittery kicks for every thinkable occasion this holidays.

Christmas dinner with the family

Roksanda flute sleeve blouse, $1,085; Zara embroidered bag, $45.90; Marco De Vincenzo glitter heels, $1,010; Roksanda skirt, $2,216; ASOS fishnet socks, $4.32

For the sartorial shy, start with a pair of glitter heels in black and white. The monochromatic colour scheme lends a subtle, more wearable trait to the dazzling number, making sure that you stand out in appropriate doses.

For a quirkier look appropriate for a sit-down family roast dinner, bust out some coloured socks and match them to your ensemble of sweaters and wool skirts.

Christmas Eve partying

House Of Holland slip dress, $319; Oscar De La Renta hoop earrings, $736; Jimmy Choo Milla clutch, $815; Miu Miu glitter velvet shoes, $829

Avoid sparkle overload by marrying (or merrying, ha ha) your look with simple, matte black accessories. This offsets the too-glamorous factor of it all so that you can feel free to go wild with the rest of your outfit (well, not too wild).

Jazz up your look for the dance floor with a metallic red slip dress and a matching pair of glitter pumps and finish off the look with clean-cut black accessories.

Christmas cocktail party

Bottega Veneta clutch, $5,783; Needle & Thread Lumiere tulle gown, $475.24; Miu Miu pink glitter Mary Jane heels, $1,290; ASOS rose gold hair clips, $17.24

It’s Christmas, that should be reason enough for us to indulge in our childhood fantasies and dress up as the Sugar Plum Fairy all we want. Jokes aside, this stunning diaphanous pastel tulle gown looks exquisite and fitting for the most magical time of the year.

To really punch up this look, throw in a pair of glitter pink Mary Jane pumps, some decadent rose gold hairclips and a metallic clutch. A soft, pastel colour scheme always works to anchor a showy glitter heel.

A casual ‘Winter Wonderland’ date

Caroline Constas off-shoulder poplin blouse, $575.68; Charles & Keith handbag, $65.90; Gucci Princetown glitter mules, $990; MM6 Maison Margiela skirt, $369.31; Shashi Alicia Tassel Earrings, $42

When all else fails, opt for glitter backless mules. For starters, there’s not much surface area for glitter to fall on in the first place, so that per se cuts down half the amount of ostentatiousness of the glittered shoe. The mule is a soigné silhouette which nails down sophistication and casual all at the same time.

Sprinkle some glitter atop of that and — voila, fun and refinemeng all in one. For a casual day out with your beau, throw these glittered mules on and team it with an off-shoulder blouse, a denim skirt and a shimmery gold structured handbag. And don’t forget tasseled earrings; they’re just so festive, we can never resist.
