Seasonal trend reports have a standard fool-proof formula: We look at runway images and from there, we tell you what you should do, buy and wear.
The math for our Fall/Winter ’17 trend report is a little different and it goes like this: over a 100 runway shows seen, 300 looks, a 12-hour shoot and over a week of model castings. The result? Our nine favourite looks that aren’t just pretty, they give you a whole new personality too.

Demna Gvasalia clearly knows what he’s doing and it’s hard to deny his influence on fashion today – the quirky bag, the head-scratching but covetable clothes and his take on elevating the everyday. A must-buy from Balenciaga this season? A coat that goes both ways in true Balenciaga fashion – it looks great buttoned asymmetrically or not.

The ’50s are split into two fields – one the left, you have the saccharine lass who loves her pretty frocks and picture perfect makeup and on the right, you have the classic rock and roll girl. The equation to achieve the latter’s look hasn’t changed over the looks – it’s still leather + a headful of curls + a fun ‘tude = Sandy Olsson post-makeover in Grease.
Leather pullover and leggings (prices unavailable) from Alexander Wang. Gold plated earrings, $189, from Swarovski.

No era in fashion hits the sweet spot between being glamorous and comfortable like the ’40s.
A fancy evening dress? It’s made of high-quality silk but yet, has lurex for stretch. A simple silver necklace that’s lightweight on the neck? Embellished with many a gemstone. Bottega Veneta’s Fall/Winter collection is very ‘40s, very pretty, very Donna Reed in It’s A Wonderful Life.
Silk and lurex dress, $10,150, nappa leather belt, $560, crocodile leather clutch, $20,660, silver necklace with garnets, onyx, cubic zirconia and gold detailing, $3,990, silver earrings with chalcedony, garnet and cubic zirconia embellishments, $1,650, from Bottega Veneta. Coach acetate glasses, $230, from Spectacle Hut.
You may agree to disagree but The Incredibles is Pixar’s best movie of all time. The famous phrase from our favourite on-screen sartorialist from that particular one? No capes – just Phoebe Philo’s famous tuxedo coat that’s back and bigger.
Lined polystyrene coat, $4,900, wool trousers, $2,100, brass pendant necklace, $750, calfskin boots, $1,750, from Céline. Miu Miu acetate glasses, $420, from Spectacle Hut.

The ’70s brought about funky disco-inspired fashion and the ’90s was well, grungey. The ’80s were much more practical – back then the working woman needed great basics to throw on and get on with her day. Pictured here are from Michael Kors.
Michael Kors Collection georgette blouse, lambskin skirt, leather belt and gloves (prices unavailable) from Michael Kors. Brass bracelet (worn as choker), $2,080, brass and crystal earrings, $850, from Prada.

When you think athleisure, you’ll think of polyester, hoodies and leggings you’d actually work out in. Well, Fall/Winter’s rendition of athleisure just got a more luxurious upgrade – it’s still comfortable, feels and looks luxurious and isn’t your run-of-the-mill darkly coloured offerings.
Shearling coat, $9,950, silk pants, $2,890, patent leather pumps, $1,280 from Chloé.

We millenials remember the ’90s for the fondest reasons – the music, the television shows (when some of us were actually watching shows on it as opposed to Netflixing them) and of course, the fashion that oddly, seems to be making a comeback. Marc Jacob’s collection for Fall/Winter 2017 is the sweet spot between ‘90s hip hop and the soul train movement.
Argyle sweater, $1,400, wool trousers (price unavailable), Snapshot calf leather bag, $830, brass and enamel necklace, $360, from Marc Jacobs.
