This year’s BAFTA Awards followed suit from last month’s Golden Globes, where female attendees wore all black to show their support to the Time’s Up movement. This movement is about women saying no to sexual harassment – women standing together in unity against assault, many of whom have silently suffered for the sake of their careers in Hollywood and beyond. Female stars turned out once again in their significant black outfits, save for one – Duchess Kate Middleton. She arrived wearing a deep green floor length Jenny Packham gown.
Why? Apparently, royalty are not allowed to show any affiliation with political affairs – they’re not even allowed to vote. To have worn a black gown would have shown her personal support for Time’s Up which, technically, can be seen as a ‘political’ movement. Except it’s not actually political at all, leaving followers and the general public to question her ensemble choice on the occasion.

Ms Jolie kept things very simple in her choice of ensemble, wearing a strapless velvet black floor-length gown, exposing her shoulders and intricate back tattoos. Her makeup and hair also followed suit as both were kept minimal, with only a light smokey effect on the eyes. The chandelier diamond earrings and ring were her accessories of choice to brighten up her muted palette choices.

J-Law and Dior not only rhyme, but they fit together in classical style to make the perfect pair. Therefore it was no surprise that she wore a black Dior gown on the red carpet, plucked from their S/S ’18 couture collection. She ventured beyond the required ‘all black’ attire with light white mesh fabric sleeves. Dark red lipstick finishes off her red carpet style.

Rocking up in a Givenchy couture black gown, we loved Margot Robbie’s dress choice at the BAFTAs. She wore a halterneck dress that had underlay cut outs with an overlay that was made from light mesh and adorned with embellishments. She kept her makeup just as classy and sophisticated, accompanied by her hair down and some studs as her accessories. The result? Less is absolutely more and when you’re naturally beautiful, you need only your smile to keep winning hearts.

Imagine a gothic fairytale, and that’s where Lily James’ BAFTA style will dwell. Her strapless ballgown by Burberry, should it have been white, wouldn’t look out of place in a bridal magazine. The waistline has adorned with crystal embellishments whilst the skirt is layered with tulle. She completes her look with diamond earrings and chunky bracelet.

The epitome of a millennial, the 21-year-old actress Anya Taylor-Joy showed us all how to really rock Dolce & Gabbana. Her statement gown was made from black hotpants and a corset inspired top, with an overlay of embroidered black mesh as a skirt. The embroidery became more dense as the fabric hit the floor, revealing just her mid section of her thighs. It’s quirky and gothic and we absolutely love it. To top it all off, she goes that bit extra and wears a golden crown. Because why not?

Salma Hayek wowed in this floor length Gucci gown. The dress sports floral embellishment on the sleeves and waist line, showcasing an oversized black ‘bow’ made from sequins with a flower motif in the middle. The dress cleverly shows off her two famous assets by highlighting the chest hemline with more embellishment, whilst the large waist detail draws the eye inwards, leaving Salma with a fantastic silhouette .

Emma? The 80’s called and they said they want their shoulderpads back. Oh wait, they said you can keep them because you looks fabulous. Emma Roberts turned up on the red carpet in this deep plunge black dress by Schiaparelli. The front split and low cleavage hemline is balanced out by erect rounded shoulder pads and circular oversized earrings. It’s playful, but not promiscuous – a hard line to keep. Bravo Emma!

Amy Jackson is a British actress who predominantly features in Indian movies and this was her first BAFTAs appearance. She arrived in a Julien Macdonald strapless dress that hugged her enviable figure. The plunging neckline was supported by a triangle piece of mesh fabric, to ensure she remained conservative. She went for a very minimalist approach to her makeup and hair too, sporting just a silver choker necklace and some crystal hair slides.

Can we get a standing ovation for Naomi Harris’ outfit please? Veering away from the typical gown but staying on point with the black movement, she turned up in black pants and a top-turned-cape that skimmed the floor. The top was see-through yet she covers all her modesty with black details and embellishments. It’s quirky and feminine and very daring, giving her red carpet style points for individuality.

If you’re used to the Game of Thrones drama, it is no surprise that you’d bring a little bit of the dramatic with you into your ensembles. Natalie Dormer showed us all why she was part of the GOT family, arriving in a chiffon black ball gown that trailed across the red carpet and fluttered in the British wind. Her dress was big, her hair was big and her earrings were even bigger – all resulting in style points of epic proportions. She totally slayed – but luckily not in the typical GOT version of the word.
