The Her World office has been unusually
rowdy of late. And for the first time in a
while, it hasn’t been because of yet another
to-die-for pair of shoes that our fashion team
has discovered on its jaunts about town.
Cause of the commotion – staffers
ogling at/objecting to the slew of contenders
thrown up for our annual 50 Men We Love special. It’s been amusing, to say the least, to
see grown women (mothers-of-two included)
debate over the merits of a photo of a
smouldering, bare-chested man versus one
who’s fully clothed. Some have even taken
to marking out their favourites with hearts
and smiley faces alongside the photographs.
What can I say? Girls will be girls.
But our choices have not been solely
influenced by looks (really!) What’s added to
the coos of approval are the qualities that these guys possess: intelligence,
a sense of humour, maturity, humility, a certain worldliness, and success in
whatever their chosen fields.
What’s especially heartening is that while a lot of my single girlfriends in
their 30s firmly believe that the best men are either married or bat for the
other team, our list proves that there are still many eligible (and straight)
men out there. And based on our research, the majority of them aren’t out
of reach. Features writer Zarelda Goh, who interviewed the majority of our
50 men, says: “Yes, though men are visual beings, it’s not just a drop-dead
gorgeous girlfriend they’re after. So many of the men I met said ‘It’s got to
feel right’, and that’s totally unrelated to how a woman looks. Intelligence
and a sense of humour rank high for many of them.”
Men aside, this month’s issue has more stuff we women can’t live without
– shopping and desserts! We’ve picked out the best mall buys at this month’s
Great Singapore Sale. Or if you’re too lazy to go out, we show you the
best online stores where fashionistas do their armchair shopping. Finally,
celebrate those finds with the yummiest desserts in town – 30 categories of
sinful sweets to be exact – in our food feature Divine Desserts.
Here’s to enjoying a host of guilt-ridden pleasures this month!
