Oscars 2013: The winners and red carpet highlightsThe 85th Academy Awards may not be known for the unexpected.

As most would have thought, Oscar favourite Daniel Day-Lewis (
Lincoln) won the Best actor award, making it the third time that the British actor had won the coveted prize. Following a series of wins this award season, Best picture and Best supporting actress front runners Argo (dir. Ben Affleck) and Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) too were awarded the prizes in the respective categories.

But the glitziest international film event of the year still managed a few surprises. In a move that few had expected, Ang Lee received the Best director title for Life of Pi, one of the top honours of this year’s Oscars.

The most unanticipated win went to Jennifer Lawrence (right), who had bagged the Best actress award, upsetting popular predictions that Emmanuelle Riva (
Amour), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) would bring home the Oscar. Lawrence did not seem to expect the win either. In her excitement, she tripped on her heavy Dior Haute Couture dress on the steps of the stage.

Even before the award ceremony commenced, most viewers were already tuning in for the red carpet walk. Stars shone in classic gowns and well-coiffed hairdos; relive the glamour of the night by browsing our selection of red carpet snaps in the gallery below.
