how to stop being a needy girlfriend

Whether you’re in a new relationship or have been with your man for a while, it’s important to not smother him (and vice versa). Avoid being a clingy girlfriend by following these five simple rules.

Keep your friends

It’s common for women to ‘dump’ their friends when they start dating a man but if you’re doing this, it really isn’t healthy for you or your relationship. It’s important to maintain your regular social life and keep your independence. When you neglect your friends, you’re demanding more time from your partner, and therefore coming across as clingy. And you’ll almost certainly lose some friends too, which isn’t exactly ideal, is it?

Don’t stalk him

Whether you’re cyberstalking him on Facebook or Instagram, secretly checking his messages on his phone or even keeping tabs on all non-work appointments, you need to stop right now. You might be his girlfriend but you really don’t need to know what he’s doing every minute of the day. Give him space – he’ll definitely be happier if he doesn’t feel suffocated.

Do your own thing

Being in love can feel amazing but that doesn’t mean that you have to be with bae constantly. Make time to do things you love, away from him. Whether it’s a yoga class, a regular coffee date or ladies night with the girls or a volunteering gig in the weekends, do things that keep you happy without your boyfriend. It could even be something as simple as staying home to read or catch up on girly TV shows. You need things in your life other than your boyfriend that make you smile.

Don’t get paranoid

So you messaged him half an hour ago but he hasn’t replied? He usually replies within minutes so why isn’t he doing so now? Freaking out over something like this is not normal behaviour so don’t do it. You will only appear as clingy and that really isn’t attractive. Life gets in the way sometimes and he might not always be able to answer your calls or messages on the spot so just keep calm and carry on.

Relax, don’t do it

You don’t have to be in control all the time and it’s important to accept that his life doesn’t revolve around you (unless he’s the needy type too). You should trust him as being clingy is usually a result of women not trusting their men enough that they feel they have to be with them 24/7. Understand that you don’t need to be attached at the hip so let him do his own thing too, so that he doesn’t end up resenting you.
