ARE YOU SPORTING THESE SIGNS?

Beauty sleep isn’t beauty sleep if you’re doing it wrong. Here’s why: If you snooze on your side, odds are you’ll wake up with “sleep lines” on your face.

Tell-tale signs? Check to see if you spot streaks running down the side of your nose these are the lines caused by your cheeks smooshing up against your mouth at night.

Regular “side sleepers” may also find one half of their mien marred by more lines than the other – the consequence, it seems, of having the same side perpetually pressed up against the pillow, night after night.

Want more bad news? Do this every time you hit the sack and those creases on your cheeks may just coalesce into fixed furrows on your face – the very same way you may be washing your way to wrinkles with repetitive use of roughly textured cleansing towels.

And skin skeptics, this isn’t some old wives’ tale like some beauty myths you may have encountered, either. For what it’s worth, the American Academy of Dermatology itself notes that sleeping on your side is a surefire way of promoting premature ageing.

WHAT TO DO TO PREVENT THIS

Warning! Your night beauty routine is causing wrinkles B2.png

If all of this is enough to make you want to lie down for a bit, have no fear. The solution is incredibly intuitive: Simply make a conscious effort to sleep on your back.

Easier said than done, I know. But here’s a pretty good compromise: “Invest in a memory foam pillow like those from Tempur Pillows, which will hug the contours of your face and train your body to stay put,” advises makeup artist Larry Yeo. “And stick a small bolster under your knees to prevent your body from tossing and turning through the night.”

If sleeping on your back remains an impossible task, here’s the last, if rather luxe resort: Satin pillowcases in lieu of your usual cotton ones. Fabrics like satin – good for towels, too, if you’re kiasu like me – will glide like well, silk, cutting down on as much friction between your face and your pillow as possible.

So, to recap. Lie upright (or on satin if you’re princessy); wake to a visibly vibrant visage. See? Not so hard to sleep your way to youth.
