It’s time to get bigger and bolder with your hair accessories – a huge hairstyle trend spotted on the runways of fashion month.

Move away from understated and feminine styles to oversized clips and headbands, which hold down ponytails, dress up buns or take sleek hair up a notch.

What’s more, it’s the best kind of trend to wear in our weather. Here are eight different ways to pull it off:

HEADBANDS
These headbands look nothing like the neon ones you see in 80s aerobics videos. They’re cool, solid coloured bands that come in a variety of textures and thickness for you to experiment with, according to your style.

LOOK #1 Hair at Chanel’s recent Brasserie Gabrielle show was inspired by Parisienne ladies who lunch. Hairstylist Sam McKnight did a French twist on models’ hair, with black ribbon headbands tied neatly at the nape of the neck. Some even had silver or gold double-C hair clips.

LOOK #2 At Fendi, McKnight twisted soft, tousled ponytails into ruched leather headbands instead.

LOOK #3 You can also try the sleek, wet look at Proenza Schouler by hairstylist Anthony Turner. Here’s a step-by-step explanation to getting the look by the man himself. Oh, and just a heads up, get lots of thickening spray on standby!

CLIPS
We saw feminine embellishments in the last season’s shows, but now, clips get chunky and oversized. In other words, the bigger, the better.

LOOK #4 Got a brooch you love, but not sure how to wear it without looking like an auntie? Pop it on the side of your head to complement an elegant low bun like the ones seen at Dolce and Gabbana. Part your hair in the centre and let some strands at the side of your head loose. You can even wear the brooch at the top of your bun and with a jewelled headband for more luxurious bling.

LOOK #5 Statement pins held down puffed-up side ponytails at Prada. Here’s what you need to hold up the oversized (read: ridiculously heavy) clip: bobby pins and hair gel, lots of it.

Hairstylist Guido Palau – who also did the hair at Dolce & Gabbana – raked gel through the hair from root to end and blow dried the hair upwards. He tied a tight ponytail at the top of the head, then pinned it down at the side with the statement piece. Use bobby pins for extra support, but keep them hidden. Finish off with hairspray, as always.

LOOK #6 Maybe bling isn’t really your thing. Try this look with a geometric clip by hairstylist Odile Gilbert, as seen at Suno.

Remember to keep your hair looking sleek straight by flat ironing it first – don’t forget the heat protectants – and use a gel to maintain hold.

LEATHER BANDS
The easiest accessory to wear out of the lot, and the one that requires the least time too – best for the office!

LOOK #7 Pewter leather bands were seen cuffed around ponytails on darker hair models at Carolina Herrera. Getting the chic low ponytail is almost the same as look #3, but this time, it’s tied at the nape of the neck with an almost invisible elastic band, then wrapped over with the leather cord. The hair is also a lot neater in his look from using an extra strength gel.

LOOK #8 If you’re too lazy to wrap a leather cord around your ponytail, you can always tie a knot, like this one from the Tanya Taylor show.
