How to use colour correcting concealers and primers for Asian skin tones thumb

The fundamentals of colour correcting lie in “neutralising” certain colours with opposing colours on a colour wheel. For example, yellow neutralises purple, green neutralises red, and orange neutralises blue.

Understanding this should make figuring out the makeup specifics a lot easier! We’ve seen some crazy hacks out there, like using red lipstick to conceal a tattoo or very dark circles, but a lot of these probably won’t work on Asian skin tones. Here’s a brief guide to the three colours you need to know about (unless concealing tattoos).

#1 Dark under-eye circles
The first thing you need to understand about dark circles is that they aren’t a universal colour. Some people have dark circles that look more purple and others more blue. Salmon or peach toned concealer works great for blue dark circles, and a yellow-based one will work better against purple.

#2 Sallow skin
Ever had someone tell you that you look a little unwell? Sallow skin simply means there is an almost sickly yellowish tone to your skin. Asian skin tones are more prone to looking yellow as we genetically have a higher percentage of yellow pigment in our skin. If you look at the colour wheel, purple is the colour you want. Fret not! Several brands have purple radiance primers that will work well to neutralise this.

#3 Acne or red spots
I’m confident you ladies know your stuff by now and have figured out that green concealers are your best friend when it comes to hiding red spots and inflamed pimples. A little goes a long way is a good rule to follow. If you have rosacea and are prone to redness all over your face, find a primer or CC cream with some green in it!
