One of the most prominent looks on the Fall/Winter 12 runway was the 1960s inspired high hair and retro makeup seen from Italian designer duo DSquared.

Forget about recession and depression, here was an upbeat, playful look that certainly makes fall a happier place.

While makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury went for matte skin, heavy winged black eyeliner, lush brows and double false eyelashes, the real wow-factor was the hair.

“It’s a little Lana del Rey, a little prom girl. Very 1960s, very proper… destroyed a little bit of course,” said hairstylist Sam McKnight about the styles.

“There’s a Peggy Lee feel about it too. And it’s the 1960s American girl band meets prom queen.”

So how do you recreate the sexy and voluminous style at home? Here’s how.

1. Start by prepping towel-dry hair with a texture and volume enhancing product, such as Sachajuan Root Lift. Apply on scalp and massage lightly into roots.

2. Blow dry hair in sections, making sure every section is properly dry before you move on to the next.

3. Back-comb hair, for example with the clever Narrow Dressing Brush from GHD.

4. Style into the Lana del Rey-inspired 1960s shape.

5. Finish with a strong-hold hair spray such as classic Elnett. © Cover Media
