When we look at people with flawless skin, we tend to think about how lucky they are to be genetically blessed with such radiance. While genes do make it easy, there are simple steps that everyone can take to promote the health and wellness of the body’s largest organ.  Here are 7 daily habits followed by people who have luminous glowing skin.

  1. They look at what their skin needs on a day-to-day basis

Rather than sticking to a strict, rigid skincare regimen, it’s important to assess what your skin needs on a day-to-day basis. If you wake up feeling dehydrated and your skin shows that, lather up some hydrating cream and serum and let that soak in. If you are breaking out, dab a little tea tree oil. And if your skin is calm and well-balanced, just wash your face with water before patting it dry. Long story short, it is crucial to look at your skin in the morning to see what it needs instead of just applying the same products and following the same routine all the time.

  1. They remove their makeup

While it’s tempting to hit the hay as soon as you get home from a long day of work, taking those extra minutes to remove all your makeup is imperative for clean unblemished skin. In an interview with us, local model Fiona Fussi shared that she maintains her smooth complexion by thoroughly removing all of her makeup. If you have makeup left overnight on your skin, especially heavy oil-based foundations, concealers and primers, it can cause your pores to get clogged which in turn leads to acne. And if that is not enough to deter you from wearing your makeup to bed, the risk of premature wrinkles might do the trick. Even if you don’t have makeup on the free radicals from the environment can stay on the surface of your skin when you don’t cleanse your face at night. Over time, these free radicals can cause the collagen (a type of protein that give our skin strength and elasticity) in your skin to breakdown, which leads to the formation of fine lines and prematurely aged skin.

  1. They exfoliate

You might be cleansing, moisturising and loading up on the sunscreen, if you are not exfoliating, your skin just wouldn’t be as clean and as healthy as it could be. Exfoliation refers to the removal of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. In addition to revealing new skin cells, exfoliating also helps with the removal of dead cells from the pores, making them appear smaller. Additionally, removing the buildup also enhances your skin’s ability to absorb the rest of the skincare you are using. Deciding between a physical exfoliator and a chemical exfoliator? Go with the latter. Physical exfoliators like coarse, chunky scrubs can cause microtears on the skin’s surface and irritate the skin when you over-scrub. Chemical exfoliators such as retinoids and alpha hydroxyl acids, however, encourage cell renewal that helps the skin shed dead tissues more effectively and stimulate the production of collagen.

  1. They change their pillowcase

If you want good skin, make it a point to change your pillowcase every few days. A dirty pillowcase can lead to bacterial growth and skin conditions like acne. Also, the hair products we use can rub off onto our bedding throughout the night and cause even more residue to build up.

  1. They stay hydrated

A lack of moisture is one of the major causes of skin ageing. That said, you can’t just slather on heavy layers of moisturiser. You need to hydrate from within. Song Ji-eun from the now-defunct girl group Secret is zealous with drinking water as a way to keep her skin dewy and hydrated. She  makes sure to drink three to four litres of water daily for luminous skin. She even revealed that she feels the difference if she doesn’t drink as much water for a prolonged period. Consider adding a lemon to your water, cutting up some apples for breakfast, or citrus fruits to your snacks and drinking some green tea to counteract those harmful free radicals while staying hydrated at the same time.

  1. They protect their skin from the sun

The harmful UV rays from the sun can accelerate the skin’s ageing process and cause fine lines, dark spots and hyperpigmentation to appear.  As a rule of thumb, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 to 50. Even if you work indoors all day, your skin needs the protection. Don’t just take it from us and follow the lead of Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing who always has sunscreen on, even when she is sitting in front of the computer screen! Don’t forget to reapply as needed throughout the day.

  1. They clean their phone daily

Your phone is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria so make it a point to clean your phone daily with a damp cloth. Also, don’t press it directly against your skin when talking on the phone.
