We hate to break it to you, but there’s a good chance the falsies you have in your beauty kit might not be the right ones for you. If you thought all falsies were made equal, well, think again! Like how you’d choose a hairstyle according to your face shape, you should be doing the same with your falsies.

Here’s how to do it.

Determine your eye shape

The first step is of course, to determine your eye shape (this will also be helpful for when you do eye make-up).

Get a good look in the mirror and observe the little things like whether you have mono or double-lidded; whether they slant upwards or downwards at the corners; if the entire iris is visible or partially obscured by your eye lids, and how much space there is between your eyes.

Almond eyes

Ardell Fashion Lash, $9, available at Sephora

Definition: Slightly pointed at both ends, wider centre, curve of the iris is hidden by the upper and lower lids.

Falsie match: Almond eyes are the equivalent of having an oval face, so if you’re blessed with them, lucky you because almost any style of falsies will suit you! Emphasise your eyes by picking a pair of full lashes with an evenly distributed volume.

Round eyes

DUP Eyelashes Rola 04, $20.90, available at Watsons

Definition: You are able to see most of your iris – think celebs like Katy Perry and Zooey Deschanel.

Falsie match: With your eye shape, you’ll want to use curlier lashes to lift and enhance the curve of your top lid. Avoid super voluminous lashes as they can make your eyes look smaller, and go for length instead.

Mono-lidded eyes

Tarte Tarteist PRO Cruelty-Free Lashes, $18, available at Sephora

Definition: Common amongst Asians, mono-lidded eyes are where the skin covers the upper eyelid and there is no visible ‘crease’.

Falsie match: Opt for fluttery, multi-layered or criss-cross lashes so as to open up your eyes. However, you don’t want them too long or dense as they can make your eyes look even smaller. Hold the falsies up to your eyes before application, and trim as needed.

Close-set eyes

Natasha Denona Singles False Eyelashes, $18, available at Sephora

Definition: Measure the length of one of your eyes. If the distance between your eyes is shorter than that length, then you have close-set eyes.

Falsie match: Place more emphasis on the outer corners of your eyes so as to balance and lengthen your eyes outwards. You can either buy several shorter falsies, or trim a regular pair.

Hooded eyes

DUP Eyelashes ROLA 02, $20.90, available at Watsons

Definition: You have a prominent brow bone, so the crease of your eyelid is not clearly visible.

Falsie match: With your eye shape, you’ll want to focus on the centre of your eyes. Use a mix of long and short strands, placing the longer strands right above your pupil. This helps to frame your eyes.

Upturned eyes

Benefit Cosmetics Real False Lashes in Girly Up, $26, available at Sephora

Definition: Aka the cat eye. Upturned eyes have outer corners that point higher than the inner corners and gently slope upwards.

Falsie match: Play up the feline aspect and enhance your eye shape with a flick of eyeliner and dramatic lashes strategically placed at the outer corners of your eyes. Ideally, you’ll use a mix of falsies as you don’t want to use thick, heavy styles at your inner corners as they’ll make your eyes look smaller.

Deep set eyes

Lavie Lash in Fleur, $6, available at Sephora

Definition: Similar to hooded eyes, this eye shape rests under the brow bone and are set deep into the skull. This tends to give the illusion of a more prominent brow bone.

Falsie match: You’ll want extra length eyelashes that curl up and away from the eye so as to make your eyes appear larger. Tip: highlight the inner corners of your eye to make them appear even larger, and avoid lining your lower eye line with dark colours.
