“Do as I say, not as I do.” Even Beauty Editors have been guilty of this. Yes, we always remove our makeup properly, but we must confess that we sometimes mess up our winged eyeliner, struggle to get our eight-glasses-a-day of water, and have been known to squeeze the occasional zit. Our worst beauty crime is possibly not bothering to apply our skincare properly. We’re tired, we’re not getting enough sleep, and we’re probably testing eight different serums at the same time, so forgive us if we lazily sweep on our products instead of patting, massaging or tapping them in.
Not following the brands’ directions means we’re never going to get the most from the super-duper high-tech skincare products we’re using. The right massage techniques are said to hugely boost absorption of ingredients, while increasing circulation to make our complexions look healthier. So imagine our excitement when we heard about SK-II’s new Magnetic Booster device – it promises to enhance the penetration of skincare ingredients in only 60 seconds.
Gadgets that promise to boost absorption of skincare ingredients using pulses and vibrations are nothing new. The difference here is the inclusion of magnetic technology. According to a study by SK-II, this targets specific ingredients in the brand’s anti-ageing products to enhance their penetration into the epidermis. Used in conjunction with the vibration technology, this supposedly means that ingredients are absorbed three times more quickly compared to application with fingers.
Just how should the Magnetic Booster be used? After cleansing, use SK-II Facial Treatment Essence for hydration and to maintain normal skin cell turnover. Next, apply SK-II R.N.A. Power Essence, a rich but light antioxidant serum that combats photo ageing by supposedly preventing DNA damage in cells.
Then, it is time for the main event. Apply the SK-II R.N.A. Power Cream, which is designed to tighten and brighten over time, then gently move the SK-II Magnetic Booster upwards and outwards over the face for 60 seconds. It delivers consistent and gentle pulsations at 7,000 magnetic vibrations per minute, and supposedly boosts product penetration by up to three times. It is also said to help promote circulation and reduce the look of signs of ageing, making the Magnetic Booster an essential companion for your anti-ageing skincare routine.
There’s no need to fiddle with an on/off button – the device switches on automatically when you hold it between your fingers and comes in contact with your skin. We tested it for ourselves, and the gentle vibration felt comfortable and pampering. After 60 seconds, all the cream had vanished into skin, leaving it soft, smooth and hydrated.
Finally, apply the SK-II R.N.A Power Eye Cream around your peepers. It promises to reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines, and make pores appear smaller, so eyes look bigger, brighter and younger.
There’s no doubt that this device helps products to be absorbed quickly (we tried it with the cream, but you can use it with the serum too). It looks good – a fine addition to our bathroom cabinets – and is easy to use too. And because it makes skincare products work harder, you can expect increased radiance, hydration and plumping – more quickly too. Bonus: We get all the results of applying our skincare properly, without the faffing or waiting around, so we have more time to do the stuff we really want to do – like catching up on beauty sleep.
The Magnetic Booster is available in a set with the R.N.A. Power Cream (80g) in the SK-II Magnetic R.N.A. Cream Kit ($253), or with the R.N.A. Power Essence (50ml) in the SK-II Magnetic R.N.A. Essence Kit ($258), at all SK-II counters island-wide. For more information, please visit www.sk-ii.com.sg.
