French skincare, makeup and spa brand Clarins has been gifted its own orchid, bred by the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

The crimson Clarins Orchid, named Renanthera Clarins Christian & Olivier, is a new hybrid of two award-winning Renanthera hybrids from the United States and Malaysia.

It’s the first time a premium skincare brand has received this honour. It serves as tribute to the French brand for its continual support of sustainable development and maintaining biodiversity.

“It’s not simply a flower but it validates the efforts that Clarins has dedicated to sustainable development all these years,” chairman of the Clarins Group, Mr Christian Courtin-Clarins said at the Clarins Orchid Presentation on December 9, 2010.

The brand’s initiatives include controlling the quantity of plants harvested, fair trade commitments while sourcing for its plant extracts and ensuring producers and harvesters enjoy good working conditions – the brand has even constructed schools and built drinking water supply systems in countries like Madagascar and Vietnam.

Clarins’ Spring makeup collection, called Neo Pastels, will be out in February 2011.

Clarins has also been working with the Singapore Garden Festival since 2006 to create displays for visitors. It sponsored window displays at TANGS Orchard to promote orchid conservation.

Clarins is available at major department store beauty halls including TANGS Orchard. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is at 1 Cluny Road, Tel: 6471 9961.
